Could any body help with the correct thickness of the Cooper s and Clubman GT boot lid liner. I have the correct board but need to machine it to the correct thickness as I understand this was done from new.

The original Boot Lid leatherboard liner was 3.85mm thick.

The material was manufactured in both 6.25mm and 3.85mm thicknesses.
The brand name was Masonite with a leather texture pressed into it.
It was known as Leatherboard and was used for many things through the 60s and 70s
such as Wardrobes as well as by BMC to line the Boot Lids of certain Minis.

Hi Dave

Thank you for that info on the Leather board ( now I know what it's call)
It took me some time to get my hands on some as I have not seen this type in New Zealand.
The Australian leather boad seems to have a much more course finish to it than on the English Cooper s boot lid liner.
I have the original one off the car but it is damaged.
Was it sprayed in the factory with a matt black finish?
Also did the Australian Clubman GT have the same liner? Or was it only some of the first GTs that came of the line?

The Finish is coarser than the English Cooper S because it was made with a different product to theirs.
Masonite Leather Board was a product manufactured here in Australia, Not Primarily for use on mini Boot Lids

The Finish was Satin Black (semi gloss)

All Australian Clubman GT's had the same Liner.

Strangely, this part (14A9838) doesn't appear in any of the UK or Australian parts books, not even the UK Cooper & S Body Parts book AKD3510. There's a page for the boot lid and its sundry parts (hinges, locks, sealing rubber, name plates, cable), but no liner mentioned.

I was wrong.

The boot lid board (called Casing - Lid in the parts book) appears in the Trim Linings & Fittings section with carpets and similar items. The part number for the Australian manufactured item is HYA3978, held on by 17 screws and cup washers.

I have a whole cupboard made from this stuff. I intended to take it apart beause it is the right thickness of board attachex to a timber frame, but cant bring myself to ruin a good cupboard.
I store my spcial mini parts in it instead....

John at MiniKing has (had??) large sheets of it. Probably the way the factory bought it. You can get 3 lids from a sheet but as mentioned earlier needs to be run thru a thicknesser.

Reminds me I still haven't redone mine yet.

Speaking of John, here's a post he made in 2008 on the same topic:

Cooper S boot lid liners where definitely made of masonite. I have checked the original drawings for HYA3978, the Australian part number for the board. Another interesting point is that the screws and cup washer used to fit this - the drawings call for these to be Florentine Bronze ( almost Black ).

Yes, I also have some of the black screws from John. Got them yonks ago when I got the board.

I know as soon as I fit them I'll be told they are wrong.

Do you think John may still have the screws and cup washers or was that some time ago.
Also can you tell me how you get all your info on the Aussie Cooper s. I have an original GT Parts book but not cooper s. Do you have Technical Bulletins by leyland Australia?

Hi Peter,

I suggest you call John rather than email him - 61-2-4648-1233. He is an extremely helpful, knowledgeable and courteous gentleman so I'm sure he will be able to answer your questions. Just be aware he's mid-way through moving Mini King premises.

There were several Australian Mini parts books and microfiche covering the Cooper S, although all had some errors and omissions so cannot be relied on totally. Having said that the vast majority of information is correct. If you tell me what model and year Cooper S you have I can let you know the appropriate publication numbers. They come up on eBay from time to time.

As a researcher and collector of BMC and Leyland Australia publications I have all the published Mini and many other BMC model parts books (e.g. Morris 1100, 1300, 1500, 1800, Moke, Marina, Kimberley, Tasman, etc.) and most of the update supplements, and the parts fiche. Also an almost complete set of BMC and Leyland Australia Technical Bulletins, plus many BMC Parts News, Partner Magazine, workshop manuals, factory engineering drawings, etc. I use all these to help answer queries like yours on Ausmini and elsewhere.
