Hi all,
Do we know how many came to Australia and how many remain?

Not sure that the the 970's were ever an official import; I suspect not.

I have a 970 but that was an import from NZ where I do know that they were imported from the UK.

an early issue of TME had some details of the official BMC imports for race use, otherwise they're all private imports

Below is part of a page from BMC's Partner magazine #22 - Oct/Nov 1965 detailing major design changes to the A series gearbox. You'll see in the narrative a reference to 1071 models imported to Australia.

I know there is a red 1071 in Melbourne that has competed at rob roy. I doubt there would be more than 4 or 5 left in Australia.

One of the 970s (ex Rhodesia) is shown in Ivan's Mini Spares & Repairs ad in TME mag. It's a bluey purpley colour.

Wow, only 13 1071's came to Australia by BMC! There must have been some truth to needing a race licence to order one.

It's the same purple Cadbury chocolate uses
With canary yellow roof, stripes and wheels.

If it is a 970 then that makes 2 in Melbourne then.

The only other one I personally know of is the sister (?) car to mine still in Enzud.
