Hi All
There is a threaded hole in my pudding stirrer gearbox (next to the block the gear lever goes into)
What is meant to go there?
I'm assuming it's an exhaust mount of some sort but what sort of fitting screws into the hole?.
Here's the view from the underside of the car (to the right of the exhaust pipe);
Image

and here it is from the top;

Cheers
Dave

Proper 850 exhaust pipe has a bracket welded on it to align with that lug. Exhaust pipe is used to help cope with torque reaction.
Without the bracket and a bolt you will break the pipe's flange where it attaches to the manifold.

850's had a gearbox steady that no other models had.

Could have been the mounting point for this?

No. It's for exhaust. I had an 850 back in early 60s, the only extra steady was sold as an accessory, that bolted to the gearbox underneath and ran back to the subframe floor mounting bolt.

The exhaust pipe came with the support bracket already welded to it. You can see it in the following diagram.

You can buy extra steady / stabilisers if using a rod change or magic wand:

A lower steady would also be handy as the gearbox does tend to move around a fair bit!!!

It will move around far less after you bolt the exhaust bracket on. :wink:

The proper bracket is wrapped partly around the pipe for strength. Don't just weld a flat piece against it, that will crack the pipe.
Put a fold in it and bend it over the pipe a bit.

Hi Doc
I was also thinking about something like this-either welded on or just clamped tight

Cheers

A bracket like that going around the pipe seems like a good idea. You should be able to get one locally or even make one from steel bar.

MKO have original BMC NOS versions if that's of interest.

I'll post the BMC Australia engineering drawing for exhaust pipe and the original bracket in a moment. Just need to make some adjustments.
