 Post subject: 850 fuel tank sender fix

Hi all. I have a friends mini i am repairing. It has an 850 fuel tank fitted and the sender is not working. Its the one that is held in with several screws. Yes the guage is working ok. Has anybody fixed these as it seems new ones are not available.

Hi Ian, I had a couple of useful bits of advice offered after I had a similar problem. Try John Schmidt at Mini Kingdom for advice on how to maybe fix your unit. Alteratively, someone like Rodger Howard at Howard Instruments should be able to repair and recondition the unit for you.

I do recall finding a good article on an MG forum about a guy who rewound his own sender. Here is a link:

If you are game and a bit handy, it looks like it is feasible to rebuild one yourself.

Are you using the matching fuel gauge? The senders with the screws were non-stabilised, I don't think you can mix them?

Thats what I was thinking. 10volt Vs 12volt

Guys,
Thanks for the replies. We have a new speedo and gauges fitted with new voltage stabilizer. The guage did not work with the old speedo either. When the wires are joined (at the tank) the guage reads full.....

I will read into this a little more.

Ian, I think I see your problem - the type of sender you have (six screws) worked on a 12v non-stabilized system. You have said you are using a voltage stabiliser gauge setup. They are not compatible. You need a later tank and sender unit (which fortunately are much more common than the early setup at least...). Or else you need to revert to an early fuel gauge and eliminate the voltage stabiliser.

I've never done it, but I'm told that you can drill holes around the edges of the later sender to fit it to an early tank.

Roger Howard repaired the early sender for my Traveller. It had a burnt out coil, charred black (that can't be good inside a fuel tank!). I'm not sure how he did it, he must have sourced a correct replacement coil from somwehere. It works a treat now.
