Yeah, stay away from that one.

There 's no reason to have any body deadener there. None from the factory, and nobody would put any there aftermarket, because there's no need. They're straight-up lying to you.

Why would there be a patch of sound deadener, when there is no reason to have it there, and it just so happens to damage the stamping numbers? The answer is that there was never any sound deadening there and they just removed the numbers. If someone tried to sell this to my I'd report them. I hope you haven't handed over any money yet.

Why :?:

You did nothing wrong and the discussion was educational for those looking to purchase a genuine car...

As a general rule it is preferable that posts are not deleted from the forum, even if the question has been answered or there's a change of direction, or whatever. The thread is now a bit confusing because the original post is gone. Best to leave it all in place for future reference. ;)

It was quite common practice in the 60s and 70s for Mini owners to cut the radiator shroud out so as to mount the radiator onto the inner guard with a couple of brackets. I did that with all my Minis. You could fit a much thicker radiator and remove/refit it in a couple of minutes. So if there's no shroud anymore, is there anywhere else on the bodyshell that a number is stamped into the metal?

Its probably still has the body number in the channel above the wiper motor. 2/05 or 2/05A

Sorry everyone, I have added in the first post again to avoid any confusion.

The car did have a resto job done by the owner who has had the car for 25 years (apparently) and he noticed the numbers missing when he purchased it. See some photos of the car before the resto here.

Even 25 years ago, alarm bells should have been ringing :o

If you can get access to the car look under the radiator cowl and you may be able to see and read the reverse of the original stamped numbers.

the car is 6hrs away from me so I certainly can't see underneath. I have however looked into the engine number and looks like its a 1275 from a morris 1100/1300. Is this a company practice?

Yes, the 1275 cc engine from the Morris 1100S and later Minis is a good source of larger capacity engines when transplanting into a 998 or 1098 vehicle. It would not have been fitted to this car from the factory.
