Does anyone have an oil flow diagram of how the oil is pumped around the engine.
In particular how does the oil get to the top of the valves and push rods and the cam lobes.

Regards
Phil

Maybe this oil flow diagram is more what you are after?

I think the first one is more accurate!

Last one is pretty accurate for a manual block.
Edit- note that the rocker oil feed is intermittent, it gets 1 short pulse of oil per camshaft revolution.

However on an auto block there is no filter. Oil goes from the BIG pump, down a pipe to the transmission, then some comes UP a steel pipe into the banjo connection on the block for its lubrication. It then goes through 2 holes in the relief valve seat and into the main oil gallery. There is a blanking plate on the block where a filter would normally be. Auto has the filter on top of the transmission housing. Oil is 10W40 (UK) or 20W50 here.

When the oil flows into the rocker shaft, it then flows “into” the rockers I think.
How does the oil get to the top of the valve stem and the ball in the top of the pushrods ?
Also, how does oil get into the followers and onto the cam lobes ?
I am buying some roller tip rockers for my daughters engine build and am curious how the roller gets oil.
I am also fitting a 3.1:1 diff and have been cautioned that with the engine at lower revs on the freeway there might not be enough “splash” to lubricate the cam followers.

Puzzled
Phil

Don't worry Phil. The cam is on the inside of the crank case and there's LOTS of oil being flung at the lobes.. Same for the roller tips; its comes through the centre of the rocker shaft and escapes past the rockers and gets chucked around the inside of the rocker cover... before it escapes down the pushrod tunnels, over the cam and back into the sump.

There's plenty to go around even with a 3.1 ... based on 28 odd years with my engine

Cheers, Ian

There is pretty much an oil fog in the rocker cover when running, it gets on everything.
Also, early rockers have an oil feed to the adjustment screws which then leaks onto the pushrods.

Thanks for the explanations.
When I get the rockers I’ll see what oil galleries they have in them if any.
