I need some help.

I have a new speedo surround and want to remove the current gauge cluster to replace the broken one.

Is there a guide on how to do that?

I did check the "HOW TO" section and found zip.

The car is a 1964 English MK 1 Cooper S.

Thanks for any leads.

Undo the 4 screws on the face of the surround and the surround comes off with the gauges attached?

On UK and Aust Mk 1, the black plastic binnacle is held on by 4 pozi drive screws visible on its face. Remove the screws and binnacle. The 3 gauges are mounted on an oval metal plate behind it. The speedo itself is mounted in a plastic cowl just like the 850, De Luxe etc. The plastic cowl also holds the oval metal mounting plate for the S models.
Can't remember how much needs to be removed to get to the speedo but it is obvious once the binnacle is off.

Be gentle with the binnacle as they are very brittle. New ones were recently available, but better to have the original.

Thanks GTO. Forgot about the big screws holding the oval metal plate to the speedo cowl behind it. Have to be careful removing the metal plate with the gauges attached because the oil pressure gauge has a fixed tube connected which limits movement of the oval plate in the photo.

Here are some side-on photos with the binnacle removed.

Legends all. :D

Thanks you so much.

I thought I would remove the 4 binnacle screws staring at me but then thought, Nah, that's too obvious.

It is the cowling that holds the speedo that I need to replace so you advice is excellent.

Argh!

Just got to that place where you find that the heater needs to be dropped to get at those 2 bottom screws.

Was going well until then.

Grump.

I think you may have a Mk2/miniK binnacle if you have to drop the heater to access the 2 lower screws holding the binnacle to the firewall.
The Mk 2/K binnacle does not have any small screw heads showing on the face of the binnacle and the gauges are all mounted directly to it - no oval metal plate nor cowl.

Hi Bill. I definitely have the 4 small screws in the face of the binnacle so I reckon it's the original Mk.! kit.

My mistake. I forgot the white plastic cowl in the Mk1 still has the lower 2 screws accessed through holes in the parcel shelf - hence the need to drop the heater.
Apologies for getting you concerned.

A related question... I’m fitting a Mk1 oval binnacle to a 65 Deluxe. Do the dash trim cards go behind the binnacle, or do they need to be cut to go around the binnacle?

The dash cards go behind the binnacle. The Mk1 binnacle simply fits over the gauges as the last item that has to be fitted and is held by the 4 screws at the front.
(Mk2/K binnacle actually holds the gauges in position as well as covering them, so it goes in first and is screwed to the firewall. Cards go in last so just fit around binnacle).

I had a bit of trouble fitting Mk1 binnacle because the new cards were a bit thick and stopped the binnacle pushing flush to oval mounting plate. This situation meant the 4 screws were distorting the face of the binnacle flat against the firewall.
