I was wondering if anyone has had success in boring out a laygear to fit a needle bearing inner ring to repair a damaged surface. Some of these gears are getting hard to get.

We can't keep throwing them out as we are going to run out of stock one day

I've certainly got some laygears that are fine externally but munted on the bearing surface. I'll be following this with interest.

Seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to achieve... enlarge bore, heat laygear, insert interference fit hardened ring. (I wonder if we would need to ream/hone the ring to final spec). We may find a better quality bearing than the ones currently available, so maybe the dimensions can be altered to suit a better quality bearing. I'm no expert though, so I'd be interested in what other people have to say. Machinists in particular!

Morbo, what you propose is doable. I have repaired a number of gears from vintage & veteran vehicles by boring out the gear and sleeving them. Bearing places do have available some thin walled sleeves and I have bought needle bearings in the past that come with an outer sleeve to suit the bearing. Suggest you get the verniers out and determine the inner and outer size of of your existing needle bearing, work out how much you can skim out of the gear and visit a bearing supplier and see what is available. Good hunting

I am about to reclaim a worn 22G1040 cluster gear by boring it and fitting a phosphor bronze floating bush. Which has a spiral groove inside and out.
These bushes were available years ago by Matt Read's father, it was also a common mod for early Holden 4 speed boxes which also chewed up layshafts.

I looked into fitting a hardened sleeve, could not find one with 16mm bore.
To bore the gear and make a hardened sleeve was going to cost more than a new gear so I bought one, $500 approx.
Will advise how it goes.

Hi Kev
That would be great if you could let me know how you got on.

Thanks Bernard

I dropped the worn 22G1040 cluster gear off to the toolroom last week. With an offcut of 1" dia phosphor bronze.
(I supplied a new layshaft).
Quoted $150 total, I will put a pic up when I get it back.

Edit:
This bush replaces the small needle bearing in the 1st gear end of the cluster gear.

Bush has a spiral groove inside, I added the outside one. Clearance inside and out is 0.001".
Bore of gear's small end is now 22mm.

Oh i see you have done away with the bearing altogether. Clever. Most early gearboxes had this set up. Was the bronze anything special.

I wonder if they honed the inside of the bush after boring the 16mm hole.

Material is phosphor bronze bar. Offcut bought from Tasmania.

No honing, just fine bored to size. It's a floating bush.

I would like to do this with my laygear. What type of phosphor bronze is used. Can this be used on both ends?

Pretty sure it's this one:

https://www.australwright.com.au/techni ... or-bronze/

I have messaged the seller to confirm.

I don't see why it won't work in the other end too, there's more bearing area there.
I'm tempted to hard drill a hole through the middle of the cluster gear to improve lubrication.

drmini Would you suggest that I bore laygear small end 22mm and big end 26mm then have three phospur bronze sleeves made to fit both ends to replace the bearing? Clearance inside and out is 0.001"

I would make a single big diameter bush 2x the length of the needle bearing.
As for clearance, I would give this bush 1-1/2 thou inside and out as it's bigger diameter.

I'm a fitter and machinist by trade, these clearances are my best guess on what will work here.

After contacting the eBay supplier I used, it turns out he has supplied me LG2 (leaded) bronze, not phosphor bronze.
I will have to get some more material and make another bush! :(

Is this where the extra oil feed holes should go and should they go all the way through to the other side.
