Hi All,

Looking for help with a diagnosis:

Today I was slowing up to a parking spot and started hearing a clunking in the gearbox. Pulled up to reverse park, and can't get into reverse. The shifter goes in but no power to wheels, just clunking to the speed of revs. Tried to pull away and no forward gears either!

Will have to get it towed home and tear it down and start digging. Any ideas from the experts here what it could be??

Diff pin broken, gear linkage broken??

Do a good external check from underneath first - drive shafts, universal joints, etc. Jack up and turn each wheel by hand and observe all the way to the diff housing. If all good then presumably internal.

when you do this, don't be gentle, pull and bash and twist and turn things against each other, try it while in gear and out of gear, turn one wheel while holding the other, turn both wheels etc. etc...

hopefully it's just a broken CV or driveshaft ...

Last one I saw with this problem, the LH driveshaft had broken at the spline into the CV.

Does it make the same noise when revving in neutral with the clutch pedal up?

Mainshaft nut unwound and pinion not engaging the crown wheel in either direction?

Thanks everyone. I jacked it up this morning and this was immediately evident on the drivers side:

The drive shaft has come out of the CV completely. Will have to tear it down and see if there is damage to the drive shaft or CV...
Not sure how this could happen though?
Would this alone result in no drive to the wheels? Other side looks fine (although the CV boot has come off... Not having luck with them!)

With an open diff yes, with a limited slip diff / ATB diff, yes mostly.

I also found this ball bearing and spring, not sure if they are from somewhere? They were on the floor where I was working...

I hope that ball bearing and spring weren't in there... they certainly shouldn't have been.

I'm happy to be corrected but I'd be a little concerned that you have an odd length driveshaft, they shouldn't be able to come out like that. Driveshafts should be trapped between the inner and outer

The drivers side one is the long one right? So it’s possible you’ve got 2 x passenger side ones?

A LH driveshaft is nowhere near long enough to reach the RH CV.

That's what I would have thought.
I was doing a U turn when it happened, so at full lock would've been when it popped out.
And it all seems right when it goes together, no free play anywhere.


The ball and spring weren't covered in grease so maybe they were just there from something else...

I'm glad it was this in the end and not something a lot more expensive... I have gotten it all back together this morning.

I guess the other explanation would be if the inner joints are rubber or Hardy Spicer as they have the slip joint on the inside
