My heater fan has always been noisy. Now I know why. The barrel fan is distorted out of round and vibrates horribly. I don’t know if the motor is original as it says made in Australia and the way the wires comes out look different. Anyway I’m wondering is there a replacement available either of just the fan of both fan and motor. I’m wondering if they are common to other BMC / smiths heaters. The problem is definitely the fan. It must have been on a previous motor that overheated. The centre is melted so the fan runs with a wobble. I think they are a common fan. I have contacted the ebayer suggested. I will add a wanted post so let me know if anyone has one. They friction fit a 1/4 in shaft 2.25in wide (57mm) 4.25in Diam (109mm) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't know if I'm helping here or just muddying the waters but I bought a new Smiths heater fan some years ago on spec, from a UK source. It has p/n 17H8108. It is 107mm diameter and 56mm deep (wide). Google says it's for A/H Sprite/Midget/Minor. Not quite your dimensions but might do the job though if you can't buy the mini one. Advertised here - looks like OGW1152 lead: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-MIDGET-AU ... 4713327752 |

Phillb I had to rebuild my heater about five years ago; rust and lots of crumbled foam. At the end the fan was still very noisy; nearly as loud as the engine. My "cheap" solution was to fit a computer fan to the air intake (no external air intake) tube next to the clutch pedal. An ignition on switch is under the dash on the driver's side. The fan is very quiet and gives just enough air flow for the demister vents and warm toes. When you reassemble the heater use lots of foam around the vent door to damp vibrations. Mine vibrates at three different engine speeds. Good Luck Dave D |

From memory (I would need to double check) it does look similar to a clubman heater fan. (Its been a while since I looked- so my brain could be telling stories), but looks very similar. I will try to have a look on the weekend and one I have pulled apart. Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk |

Hi Phil - if the run-out is in the plastic of the fan, try finding a template of the same O/S diam of the fan; place the fan in the oven @ 150ºC ~5min and place into the template and 're-mould' back into shape? Try with different temps / times. It may not be ideal, as the 'blades' and will probably place some torsional forces on the upper & lower circumferences rings. Worth a try Otherwise I will try and look for a spare here F |

Further - it looks as though the motor has been replaced with those square nut(s). Motor was nominally held on by 3/16" pop rivets. Be interesting to note if the holes that support the motor have been elongated on the side plate to fit this motor? More info if you're refurbishing the unit, if the return or 'air-in' hole on the opposite side of the unit has a plastic cowl as it's lip (which your car should have - earlier versions' side cover lip was integrated metal), this is held in place by 3 x 1/8" pop rivets, i.e. the flange lip for those UK-spec'd external air hose attachment... FYI |

FYI Have wondered why the 2 alternative cowls; although not enough to keep me awake at nights. Also, Mini King catalogue quotes 17H8108 to suit metal heater. |

Try with different temps / times. Yeah I thought about that but its pretty badly distorted around the axle. Plus it’s actually cracked around the edge. Be interesting to note if the holes that support the motor have been elongated on the side plate to fit this motor? For sure motor has been replaced with something different. My theory is the original motor overheated and melted/damaged the fan. They replaced the motor but reused the fan. It’s always been noisy. It worked ...it just was noisy with the vibration. I have two Mk1 S or Cooper style heaters. One has the same motor as yours, but held in with pop rivets. On this one, I found you can swap the wires or polarity and it will reverse te fan. |
