Can the Mk2 gear stick vibration damper material be replaced/restored? |

I turned mine upside down, got rid of about half of the section that normally goes in the spring and then chamfered approximately a 45 degree in what was left until it was a nice neat fit. The spring will stay on top of what is remaining as it is held in place by the metal spacer and screws. The new ones looked like they would only last for a short while as the old one did not seem to be worn a great deal, but allowed a lot of movement in the gear lever. Graham |

I’m talking about the rubber vibration damper above gear stick pivot ball. The rubber has deteriorated and tends to rotate with each use of the gears. |

I assume they're vulcanised rubber like a harmonic balancer - googling a bit, I don't think that can be done at home but it should be doable. The alternative is to dig the rubber out, turn up an insert to fit inside the top part of the stick and weld the whole lot together, no-one would be able to tell |

You could pull it apart and remove the rubber. Hold the two parts in a jig and pump the cavity full of Sika 252. |

There are three main parts that make up the change speed lever assembly. The rubber section is actually a bush (AYG3083) with inner and outer metal tubes and vulcanised rubber in between. It is an interference fit between the change speed lever (top section) and the stub (bit with the ball). The edge of the housing is peened over to retain the bush. I'm not aware that it is repairable exactly like the original. |

An old trick was to get a Morris Minor suspension trunion over the ball on the gear stick. It preloads the control rod and takes the buzzing away. I suppose there's more ways to do this than a morris minor trunion bush, but it works for about 2 dollars... |

You could turn up a new bush from red or blue polyurethane. Edit: If the rubber hasn't fallen to bits you could put Loctite 262 or similar on the shaft and rotate it around to spread between shaft and rubber. I used this stuff 2 years ago in my 9.5hp outboard propeller to bond the rubber hub to the prop. It's still fine. |
