Hi all

Can anyone tell me the difference between 2 speed wiper motors - the first one I had was marked as a 62971045a (5-73 date), and the current one is a 62971025a (5-68 date). Aside from the date difference, is there anything else? I suspect it may be the degrees of the gear (110 vs 105?), but just don't know. Google is not being very helpful either.

Cheers!

Your current one was made in the months after the change to the round bodied motor, parking to the left, and the depressed scuttle panel mounting for the wiper boxes. No other changes were made, to my knowledge, to the way the wipers operated after that, so the other part number may well just relate to a manufacturing change, or improvement.

62971045A is the 2-speed motor first fitted in 1970 to SPO41 Ss and continued to be made up to, or after 5/1973 (according to the first one you had) whenever 2-speed wipers were required.
I am wondering if your current 62971025A (5/68) was from a mini as Lucas Aust. supplied Ford, Datsun/Nissan and others in the period. Or the cover plate has been changed at some point.

Because in April 1968, when minis changed from RH park to LH park wipers, both Deluxe and S used 62971023A single-speed, permanent magnet type motors and not the motor you are using now - according to John Sneddon's book.

I am sorry that I'm not answering your actual question as I don't know much about the motor units.

A search on Google says that 62971025A was originally fitted to Austin 1800 with 110 degrees.
See: page F25 of these service bulletins

Thanks Bill

Here's a pic of the 2 covers:

The reason I ask is the first motor had the correct sweep, whereas the new one oversweeps. The only difference I can think of is the old motor had the 110 degree gear whereas the new one has a 105.

I understand what you are getting at. I would have thought the 105 referred to the angle of sweep and 105 is less than 110 so 110 would be more likely to oversweep. But there is always something unexpected in the 'obvious'.

Take the covers off and have a look at the plate. The degree sweep is engraved on it.

This is my 1970 MK II Cooper S two speed motor - SPO41.

Yep, new motor is a 105. But i have a feeling the old one was a 110 (or it could have been something else, can't be certain as i had to send it off as a swap for the current one, and i don't have any pics of the old one with the cover off). Was curious to see if the part number could help in figuring it out.

Happy to be corrected!

62971025A was fitted to the Austin 1800. If the park plate has been changed then that number doesn't really mean anything.

Thanks Winabbey, as always a fountain of knowledge. Wonder if i should try and track down the other one and see if it fixes my issue....

Gambo - one option that usually works is to operate the motor and stop it when the wiper blades park, presumably partly over the windscreen rubber if I understand you correctly. Then remove the blades from the spindles and relocate them so the blades are on the windscreen glass and almost touching the rubber. Then operate the wipers to see if the sweep to the right (drivers side) is acceptable.

Possibly +ve earth versus -ve earth motors.
On OZ Lucas single speed motors the cover was a silver grey colour for the +ve earth motors and a gold passivated colour for the -ve earth motors.
This was for the single speed motors used on Minis when they changed from +ve earth to -ve earth cars when the DC generator on the MK1 S and Mini Deluxe was replaced by the alternator on MK2 S and Mini K. The 110 deg gear was replace by the 105 deg wheel to prevent over sweep of the wiper arms at the same time. Mine still touches the windscreen rubber on the RHS.
