Hi all,
Got an issue with recently rebuilt engine.
Starts fine and runs fine.
The problem starts when you put your foot on the clutch.
The engine will try to stall. Revs drop about 2-300
Has standard clutch and 6 thou crank thrust clearance measured when assembling engine ( also recheck measured on flywheel through starter hole as engine still in )
Lever flywheel fully rearward then clutch in and get 6 thou movement on ring gear then release clutch and it moves 1 thou rearward.
Also has new throw out bearing when engine was assembled. Nuts still in place in end of throwout carrier.
It starts slowing down as soon you take pressure on pedal.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Was the thrust washer installed the correct way around with the bearing face on the crank side?

As others have said, sounds like crank thrust washers are the wrong way around.

Or clutch plate is in back to front.

Some new clutch plates are marked confusingly. Were better when unmarked.

Is this the common Aussie diaphragm clutch?
I did not realise the clutch plate would physically fit in the wrong way around. The hub would jam against the flywheel and make a real mess. Will double check my spares in the shed tomorrow.

Unless it is A+ Verto style, them maybe they can go in the wrong way around.

Doc, I haven’t pulled it out yet but what is the actual correct way a clutch plate should go if not marked?

The flange goes on first. So flat face outwards.

If it turns out out that the thrust washers are back to front, please don't drive it any more as it will bugger the crank in short time.

I was thinking the same thing... just couldn't remember what got in the way.

Ok, quick update. Have used an scope camera to check clutch through starter hole and can confirm it is fitted correctly.
Tried using scope through dizzy hole and dip stick hole but could not manoeuvre it enough to see the thrust washers.
However we found a pic of when we were assembling it and it looks like they are infact correct as well. Will try and upload pic.
We used mixed set to get thrust as close as we could and ended up with 6 thou. A old good set on the balancer side and a new set on the clutch side. There for the new set get the force when you use the clutch.
Could they take a bit to bed in at all? Unsure if they do or not.
I also drained the oil tonight to see if there were any unwanted bits in it. First oil drop since build and it was quite thick due to the engine assembly lube that was used. Could that also be a factor?

Following up on my comments regarding the ability to install the Mini clutch plate back to front.
This relates to the Classic Mini, not the BMW version.
I inspected a diaphragm assembly and A+ Verto assembly. In my opionion neither of these can be installed with the clutch plate back to front unless you are a real animal. Anything is possible but if you were a real animal and managed to put the clutch plate in back to front, then it would be destroyed in the process, causing a crap load more problems than an engine losing revs when the clutch is pushed in.
That's my opinion, but happy to be proven wrong.
