For a long time I have wondered what these 4 little holes were meant for.
Have been slowly putting the Mk2 back together and took the opportunity to get a photo of the holes in the LH parcel shelf. The holes also go through the vinyl mat on top of the shelf. They are neatly drilled and not used for self-tapping screws.
The car was an SPO41 police specification so I guess it had something to do with the radio transmitter, although that unit was under the rear seat shelf.

Mine has four holes like yours but in a row.

My best guess to date is a surface mounted socket for the ancillaries (spotlight, hand-held POLICE sign, blue flashing beacon), although there's no corresponding depression in the vinyl. Three different connectors have been mentioned by ex-Police as having been used at various times - Small Bayonet Cap (SBC), 2 pin 32v and cigarette lighter.
