There’s actually quite a bit of choice at the moment in 10” tyres
Falken in 145 and 165
Blockley in 145 and 165
Yokohama GT Special 145
Yokohama A008 165
Aquajets in 145 and 165
Dunlop R7 165

Are you after a performance tyre? Period looking tyre?

There’s some photos and details here

Period looking I think, but maybe there's a compromise between the two?

I am not sure if you are asking about what choices there are for minis, which timmy has covered, or whether you are asking for recommendations.

For recommendations I think the Yokohama A008 was one of the best tyres I have ever had. The set I had lasted for about 17 years and only changed because of their age. Performance was more than adequate for my driving; they wore exceptionally well and looked fairly conservative except for the asymmetrical tread pattern of holes around the outer edge.

The Falken 165/70s last forever but are crap in the wet.
Falken 145 are OK in the wet I have 2 on my boat trailer. 14 years old and still good. No cracks either.

I have both A008 and falkens here and both are good solid tyre choices but I am not sure if the falkens are still available.

Most Mk Is came with Dunlop SP41s ... which have no modern equivalents (AFAIK). Early (or UK) cars had SP3s which the current Blockley's replicate. Later Ss (probably Mk IIs) could have come with Dunlop Aquajets - which are still available.

Factory fitted tyres didn't last too long :)) and there were quite a few aftermarket options from Pirelli, Goodyear and Firestone (and probably others). In the UK I had Michelin ZXs on my 65 S. Horrible tyres but you couldn't replace them because they never wore out (no matter how hard you tried :)

Anyone remember when 165/70s became available??

Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian,
Pretty sure 165/70s were mid 70s.
In the late 60s I had a sideline making 10x6 banded Mini & S wheels for Parramatta speed shop.
We all stretched 145-10 tyres over them back then!!
No they weren't tubeless.

I thought it was in the 70s .... According to Mr Google, BMW introduced a 70 profile Pirelli tyre in 1968.... But I don't ever remember a 70 profile Mini tyre from Pirelli ...

My 850 didn't really need wide wheels but radial retreads were a real step up from the old Dunlop cross plies 8o..

I still have a set of Bridgestone RD-102 165/70HR10 's (worn & useless) from the late 70's on my set of minilites. I found them the best tyre of the day, though didn't wear real well. I also had a set of Pirelli's165/70 on a set of 4 spoke 10x5 100+'s on my S in the early 80's - bought from the Pirelli dealer at Red Hill Brisbane. Good tyre, wore well, good in the wet.

I ran 165/70 Bridgestones in the mid 1970s on 7 inch wide Mawer and then widened Cooper S wheels. Now have a set of Yokohama 165/70 - AO32 Advans.

Many thanks for all your replies. It now depends on which brands I can get in Spain without having to import; charges are enormous!
