When at the lights or on over run theres a cloud of oil smoke  what could be causing this?
the engine is only fresh from a re-build. I took of the hose that goes to the carb from the back of the block and there was vapour coming out of it. It felt oily, so could it be i've got bad blow by or the crank case vent thing is knackered? or both? help cause i'm outta my depth here and want to get an idea as to whats going on so i can take it back to the engine builder and tell them what's up so i don't get the run around

matt im guessing its something called a
PCV
positive crankcase valve.
it takes the air from the crankcase (crap fumes, vapour, water)
and is supposed to feed it into the carby manifold
do you have one of these
its a saucer shaped thing that you can see here

(cut n paste)
http://www.angelfire.com/mech/ducho/engine_bay.JPG
the silver thing in the top right hand side of the pic,
hose coming out to inlet manifold

i suggest you get yourself a new diaphragm, it should be soft rubber, about $7

I wouldn't have thought the ventilation would be at fault, or at least not causing the smoke. Smoke out of the vent pipes = blow by. The engine is meant to breath, so vapour comes out etc, but smoke is bad. Mine used to puff a hell of a lot out the top, but it only ran on 1.5 cylinders :)

Did it happen all of a sudden, or gradually? Who built your engine?

Hi Matt,

How long ago was the engine overhauled? If the engine was fitted professsionally - get it back there quick!

Did you change anything like the Rocker Cover cap?

The "what oil" question is important - too slippery like a synthetic and your engine bores/rings have difficulty getting together - did you follow the engine reco fella's recommendations?

You haven't overfilled the sump? Plus what everyone else has said....

PM sent

Oh, and have you checked that the white stuff is definately coming out the tailpipe?

Otherwise it could be something as simple as a side plate gasket leaking oil onto the manifold? Clutching at straws now.....

Engine was running fine till yesterday. Still makes good power (for a 998) and the oil i'm using as reccomended by the engine builder (Morwood motors) is Castrol GTX 2 which was just changed the day before and the level is spot on full. Ok just been down stair to look at it (no name yet bastard springs to mind though) in the light and here's what i found.
Plug on no#1cyl light brown
Plug on no#2cyl black & oily
Plug on no#3cyl light brown
Plug on no#4cyl light brown
going from rad side to clutch.
It was also missing 1lt of coolant. Was checked that morning and level was ok.
So it looks like i got my first weekend off in ages and i got no mini :(
Back to morwoods on monday for a warranty claim i picked up the engine on the 27th of may so it is still covered (i hope)

So have tried another plug and that you are getting good spark to number two??

The fact that the plugs are all "brown" makes me suspect the head - a valve guide seal - did Morwoods do that up as well?

Brown? our wet with reddish unburn't fuel?? that could mean maybe an ignition problem....or a red herring!!! Don't listen to me :?

Could it have got really hot?? Could it be a head gasket problem? Checked the water for contamination?

I have to get off the net now - good luck - check your private messages

Mick over and out...

Ignition is fine as i said earlier runs sweet after it clears that crap out of it.
I.e Cold you'd swear it was diesel (chug chug chug) but once it is warm it runs smooth
I'll wait till monday throw it on the tilt tray and take it to morwood motors (Sigh)

I WAS going to the coast but now..........................
