that visor would probably lift the front wheels of the ground at 100mph

Also half of north sydneys buildings are missing from that pic, must have been early 70's??

I'd say real early, like 1970-72. They got into Toranas soon after.

The visors were mostly expanded mesh and therefore had a slighlty lower coefficient of drag!

Highway Patrol have always worn leather and riding gear (jodhpurs)....no doubt a hang over from the "mounted police"!! :?

I think the shot is way earlier than the 1970s. They are MKI Minis for a start....1970-2 they would have been MKII with flares....and the number plates....my first Mini was EFN-268 and purchased that about 1965. It was a year or two old....but the plates on the cop Minis both precede my plates.

Can't see clearly whether there are S badges on bonnet...therefore...thay could be 997/8???? ("850" grill and corner bars on the right one could mean import??)

Bit of a mystery ehhhh! :!:

That phot is actually taken on the north side looking SOUTH  That is pier 1 on the right of the bridge.

and expanded mesh actually has a higher coefficient of drag than a plate if the holes are juuust the right size

Both cars have windups and corner bars so they are Oz S.
RH car's grill is Cooper if you look close.
Could be up to `69? without the flares.

I quote from the book - "No Cars, No Drivers - Victoria Police Transport Branch 1929-1997"

Morris Mini

"In August 1967 two Morris Mini Cooper S sedans were purchased as additional vehicles. The vehicles were used for trafficduties in the city areas in particularpatrolling Punt Rd. The performance ofthese two vehicles was mre than satsifactory. However, the interior space with inadequate headroom for taller members was the problem. They were used until October 1968 when they were replaced by V8 Fords with automatic transmissions."

Photograph from book.

And here they were front line- Highway Patrol. Great in traffic or twisty roads- not so great between Canberra and Cooma etc.. 8)
They then got into Torana GTRs, then Valiant Chargers..

They sure did. I went to live in Vic in 1971 and the cops down there were not using them then. Every time I saw a cooper S lights behind me in Vic the natural thing was to check the speed out of instinct until I remembered they didn't use S's. If I recall the NSW cops disconnected the park lights after a while so we couldn't identify them in the mirrors.

The "Mexican" rims are just standard Cooper S rims. Different offset to standard Mini rims to keep the wider brakes under the guards.
