Guys, for the first meaningful post back..... got a call from my nan yesterday (where Slidey is garaged) and she says that there is a big "puddle" under the car and i should come over and see.

When i get there i find a pool of oil about half a metre square of oil.......... i checked the dipstick and it still reads fine, so i'm assuming the gearbox has emptied itslef of it contents.

When i got under the car i noticed that 2 bolts with nuts were loose and there seemed to be a lot of oil around those bolts. The bolts were in the area of the gearbox so i guess they are connected to the gearbox.

Am i on the right track, or is it something else entirely?????? :?

Steve

If the Gearbox lost that amount of fluid you would imagine that it would show up on the dipstick..

Any ideas on what or where it is from if there is no change in the dipstick level?????

Could it be possible that the oil level has dropped and it's still above the 'min' part of the dipstick?

Maybe some pics of the bolts if you can manage or a better description would help.

You said it's oil, so there isn't much else that going to leak oil apart from the motor..

You sure its oil and not brake/clutch fluid or petrol? Otherwise the dip stick would go down, unless it came from your oil filter or oilcoller if you have one!

I'm thinking it may have something to do with these loose bolts/nuts, just trying to think where they are located...

Check your Oil Filter straight away.....the oil could have been dropping down and back last time you drove her.....

The two bolts.....do you mean for the gearbox extension?

ok, talking to greg today (by the way sorry for the delay ...... computer crashed, lost everything etc etc.......) he thinks it may be the diff seals perhaps...... am checking tomorrow so will know for sure what the go is. There was no more oil leaked so i'm guessing that it has emptied itelsf or what ever i tightened under the car has fixed the leak :? very scared.....

Have a dam good look under...Oil Level is still the same :?
If its oil it would show on the Dip...It cant be petrol as is would soon evaperate and brake fluid is a totaly differnt colour.
Check everything and take a photo if need be...Strange..is it rad side front of car or back :?:

i have a 998cc clubman and have the exact same problem. it leaked oil when i got it, i did all the gaskets and it still leaks oil. i cleaned it up and put saome gasket sealer around the outside where different parts meet but still leeks around the place especially where the bolt heads are. i lose on avergae a litre or so a month.. not good. i need the 2nd synchro done on the gearbox so still in 2 minds.....

Do i get another enigne that doesnt have leaks and worn synchro or pay in the vicinity of $1000 to get the gearbox redone or buy a 1275 metro A+ engine installed for $1500....

any ideas... not sure if this helped dude..it means big bucks watever u do

beanme, unless its sentimental (spelling?) there's no F*&^$G way i'd spend $1000 on a 998.
if u go the 1275 tho u need disc brakes. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

maybe just replace the 998

it all depends how many dollars u wanna spend.
