I have a 74 Clubman and im doing work to the engine and iv'e just finished respraying the engine bay. It looks perfect except for a oval shaped hole in the side of the engine bay. It is in the drivers side of the car and seems to be there for no reason. When I first got the car I just thought it was an attempted mod by the previous owner but I noticed in a few pictures of other minis that they had the same hole! can someone please tell me what it's there for and if it's safe to bog it up and respray. Or i was thinking of putting a cool air intake and having one of the pipes running through it.

Fresh air vent. They have a plastic "intake".

third it aswell,

a black plastic air intake sits just behind the grill, and connects
to that hole, from there tubing runs from the plastic intake to
the little hole that is on the drivers side wheel arch in the car,
which then goes to the heater box..hope it helps

thanks for that, I thought it had to do something with getting air to somewhere, I think i'll put some kind of wire mesh over it to make it look like a 'special' hole.

cept if you look under the guard of the drivers front wheel, you'll probably find whats left of the convoluted intake silver pipe stuff (about 6" diameter) if its complete it connects to the black plastic vent that sits in "that hole in the firwall", but if its been damaged and broken off, its only going to fill up with water and dirt and crap, so you better off buying some replacement pipe stuff and finding a plastic vent thingy from a wrecker..
;)

there is another hole at the back of the wheel well you will want to cover that so when it rains you dont get water comin in through it

guys stop telling him lies, the hole is there so when you do an engine conversion there is a spot for the new alternator to sit :)

Yes dont forget to cover the hole that is in the wheel wel going into the cabin, when you do burn outs the smoke comes in thru there :)
