Well, I've found a beautiful Mini for me to buy (see it at http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... otohosting - it's no longer open for auction but it lives in my suburb and I can still get it, so no pinching it!), but I'm having trouble convincing my dad to let me buy it (being 18 and all, I usually need someone's permission for this sort of thing, especially since it involves selling my current car - see signature). Roughly, after a long look his words were "It's very nice, but I don't think it's the right car for you to buy at this time. We don't have the expertise or the money available for the repairs and work that it will no doubt need."

Well, money-for-the-sale-wise, I've got enough for that (barely), but money-for-repairs-and-work-wise, I don't know... how much work does a car in this sort of condition usually take? And how much does this work usually cost?

Also, how much knowledge about engines/mechanics/cars etc. does it take to run a Mini? I have a fair idea about cars, but not enough to be a skilled mechanic...

Anyone got any ideas for helping me convince him?

thats been on ebay about 3 other times....dude i think it is overpriced!

Don't rush it. You are better off spending less and fixing, than spending lots and not being able to fix!

4 grand tops, in my opinion.

For 7 grand you could build something that has everything YOU want.

Yea its only an 1100 clubby - nothing there justifies 7 grand.

I agree with the others,you could get a better car for that price.
Be patient and you will get a good car at the right price
and maybe one in original condition.

i agree, i am a really big fan of
clubbies and hate to dish them, but
for 7k you would be expecting something
fairly exceptional/rare or something....
i would hold off for a little, trust me
something will come up and will be
the right car soon, it will find you (sounds corny
but its true i believe). 4-5k for that car would
be just about right (considering there is no rust
and the engine brakes etc are all good )
ill keep my eye out for you incase i see something

Can I suggest that you explasin to your Dad that you really want to have a Mini and won't really be happy with any other car. All second hand cars require some sort of semi-major maintenance in the first 6 months of purchase (thats usually why people get rid of em!).

Explain to your Dad that you have a large on-line support network (Ausmini ) and mechanical help available (for Beer, Tim Tams, JD etc )

too expensive, and you'd always have problems with that particular one - it looks nice but the carbs on it are way too big for the motor. If it's been running with those for any length of time, I bet the oil will be full of petrol which means that the bearings will be stuffed and the motor will need a rebuild - that said, the carbs will fetch around $400 on ebay & you could put a more sensible one on

I suggest you buy something cheap, like about a grand, and start fiddling with it, keep the falcon

to show him you are serious, there
is a meeting this friday night at fivedock
you go or take him to show him the
following of the cars and that you are keen.

buy some mini magazines and leave them
around the house so he can read them and see how
the parts are mostly still available for them and that
they have a BIG following

talk about it being a good value for money purchase
as you will mostly never lose money on the initial
price of the car cos mini prices are only going up (not
taking into account the obvious money you will have to
spend fixing some things up.)

if you were goign to spend $7k on a mini, try the
gt that is for sale for $8k on the mini club of nsw
website, looks like better value!

just ou tof interest, what is Mini rego worth in NSW (rego fee plus road tax) ?

$47 rego fee + $153 tax = $200.
