What do I do to take the needle out of my near new HIF44? I was told it was on an MGB off the guy I bought it off, was on it for 2 or 3 months, brand new before then. I wanna check what needle is in it, to see if I need to buy a new one to suit my engine. Will the needle say what type it is?

Warning! poeee = SU n00b!

There will be a code stamped into the top part of the needle.
NFI how to get it out- should be same as earlier SU's, ie undo screw & pull out.

Undo 3 screws, remove dashpot & piston, there is a screw in side of piston near the bottom. Watch out for the oil inside the piston rod... it will drip out if you tip it up!

Is what i'm talking about, the "needle", screwed into the bottom of the piston? So take the dashpot off and remove that and the piston, then unscrew the needle from that?

The needle or its carrier is clamped into the piston by the screw. Undo screw and needle will pull out.

I've got it out...

Now there is a code on it, which I presume is what i'm looking for, says "BEZ".

Wrong or right or "give it a go" for my 1275? The engine is pretty much standard, think it's 1293, very mild cam grind, head is prolly standard.

Edit/ note that this carb was on an MGB before I got it, so I presume it was set up right for that.

Ooo ooo ooo I think i've found something (tho it makes no sense to me!). Checking out charts, seems like the HIF44 (going by the code on the needle) is .100" spring loaded (makes sense because it's got a SPRING on the end!).

http://www.rrocncr.org/technical/SUChart/38.gif

As I said, it makes no sense, but "BEZ" is there.

Have a look at www.winsu.co.uk and download the program. Also look at the technical articles on the minimania website. These will give you a rough guide to needle selection and then you just experiment or get it dynoed. Needle selection is pretty important, I lost 11 hp at the wheels by switching to a needle that was too rich. I have found the best place to get needles is from Midel's in Sydney www.sumidel.com.

I was playing with that program last night. Very interesting if it's all accurate, and I presume it is by looking at how many people have told me about it!

I've got a couple of HS6 (one in good condition, the other in not so good) and i'm gunna pull the needles out of them and put them to the test, see if what that program is saying by the mixture graphs is true (once the carb is on the car!).

I'll hunt around Geelong to get needles (wish me luck!). I'll get a BDL needle, which i've been told is good for my engine, and is what that program told me to get. What is the going rate for a needle, so I know i'm not being ripped off?

When you change the needles form some HS6 carb they may not have the collar on it to allow the spring to go on. You can get a old collar from a worn Needle and fit it by soldering it into place but must be very close to orginal position.

I am currenty using a BCE in my HIF and I found that the BDL was too lean for my Car but I do have a 1380 Stage 3 Head Big Bore Pipe and Midly Wild Cam.

I goes well but still do no have the Tourque that I want out of the motor.

I had better tourque when I had My twin 1.25's on.

I was just talking to someone who had a HIF44 on their Moke who changed it for twin SU's. He wreckons that you can't get the needles for the HIF44 here in Oz. Could this be correct?

I don't believe that is correct. I have got all my needles from Midel's in Sydney and have never had a problem. They actually manufacture SU needles. The bloke there told me that they actually export needles back to the UK and US.

Thanks for that. I may one day need a needle and didn't know where to look. I will pass this info on to the guy.
