Well Mini Mad blew a Payen AF070 `copper' head gasket on the 1152 Clubbie the other day- at least it lasted 1 month! Gafmo's only made 3 days..

These things are a POS since they took asbestos out of them.

Cure- use the ACL `Monotorque' composition gasket- VRS set p/no is CP250MT. (These are similar design to the BK450 `turbo' gasket for a 1275).

Available from Repco, AutoBarn, etc etc. They will probably have to order in- they all only seem to carry Bling! parts now. :cry:

<edit> the next best gasket is the standard 998 composition one, from Karcraft.

Properly, everything clean and dry, and they were retorqued when hot, then again a few days later.
They are crap. Both blew a hole between #3 & #4 cylinders.
Heads were milled flat (and checked) before fitting. :wink:

Well, as the Forum's Number 1 998 head gasket killer (About 9 in the last 24 months!!) I think i can comment on this one !

the Standard Karcraft one is excellent - this lasted the longest so far, the AF070# is pretty good, but only when its not under stress (read Hot day, 12Psi boost, traffic...Boom) OR when put in as a pair......
The ACL has stood the test so far, (been about a month so far i think.....) but I'm still not sure about its holding abilities under duress - hasnt been cold enough to wind it up yet!!

In a previous life (Holden V8-Race Spec), i found that Metal "Shim" gaskets were the dogs danglies.. couldnt kill them and they were thin enough to bump the compression up a noticable amount.... I wouldnt use one on my boosted Mini, but it may be worth a try on a standard... except they can be harsh on the mating surfaces.. (If they go, you NEED the head re-surfaced and possibly the block......)

Are these the competetion copper head gaskets from Karcraft?

I have bought one of those for my 1275. The engine hasn't been fired yet I hope that the gasket will last.

Yes, all went well until i wound out second gear a shade past 6.5k-6.7..got a bit of fluttering and thought i better grab the next gear :shock:

. Thought i snapped the crank at first but was informed by the master that if it sounds like a VW on heat it was the gasket

Big thanks to brad for picking me up and for the use of his garage and kev for his time and wisdom even though i probably annoy the hell out of him

No, these are the small bore copper Payen ones from Karcraft.

But for a 1275, I think the BK450 `turbo' gasket is better than the so-called competition copper one, these days. :wink:

I had 2 BK450s on my engine for a couple of years and they never blew. Were still good when I took them out.
I've now given up using copper gaskets.

3 & 4...Yep Total agree and no problems SInce changeing Over....YTep I'll pick the other one up tomorrow Dr just incase we do some other work or someone else is in desprate need

These gaskets are easly noted...Black with Blue Traces around it :idea:
