Just got a reply back:

Quote:
Good Afternoon Nick,

The R2200P comes with 2 seals and 1 gasket, is it possible that your filter was tampered with? Or, it could be an isolated case where the seals were missed.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Not isolated, last Ryco I bought was the same... :x
Then I found Mini Suzuki Spares here in Seven Hills had a whole bunch of NOS seal washers... so I bought a couple.:D

Righto, I have found some stuff out today that cannister type people might be interested in.

I went to purchase another new oil filter today and I went to Repco & parts for cars. AutoBarn (1 filter, missing seals), Repco had a couple R2200P filters, but both were missing the two seals (as everyone knows by now). I tried parts for cars, they were the same, they went through the 3 they had, all missing the seals.

They (Parts for Cars) ended up calling Ryco themselves to find out what is happening and they have only 'recently' found out (Friday just gone  No, I'm serious, they only found out about this problem on "friday just gone") about the missing seals. They are currently getting more seals made and going back through and re-packaging those specific filters at their warehouse.

When put on the spot about a specific timeframe before those filters hit the shelves they wouldn't narrow it down to a specific time. So it is just a case of wait and keep getting everyone to check to see if they are in there the next time they buy a filter.

In the meantime, I'm going to order some seals from Mini & Suzuki Spares to get me through.

Thought I'd let everyone know what's going on.

Hanra, that is exactly what I thought. They have known about this problem for months. But alas, I didn't actually talk to them on the phone, the dude from the parts place did. At least they are eventually going to fix up the problem

they won't actually leak if you just re-use the old seals, just leave them on the bolt and do it up again.... or even use a bit of cut fuel line - but it's the principle of the thing, right ;)

I've already re-used mine a couple of times and I know I'm doing up the bolt a bit tighter each time. The last time I had to do it up after a run cause it was dripping oil at an alarming rate - it is currently done up much tighter than I normally do it up.

It is also the principal of the thing. TBH, I'm doing up the bolt to tight now I feel like it's about to strip

The Ryco i use for my Mk1 S is R2053P and they come with one small seal. The other generic type is GFE103 and they don't have the small seal. Image

The last time i looked into oil filters the R2180P was the cross reference for GFE478 / GFE103 which are 88mm long. I think they all fit but the spring tension will be more as they are 5mm longer than the R2053P.

Can anyone please comment on how to remove the old filter head from the block? The grille bracket is in the way. Also, I’m gathering the bolts come out somehow in order to install the shorter bolts for the new spin on filter head.

Is the filter head stuck on the studs?

Tapping the filter head up and down and left and right with a compothane hammer should break the seal on the block and studs. Then you can pull the head forward and stick a pair of vise grips on the studs and unscrew them.

If you can't loosen the filter head then you will need to remove the studs first. If you can't fit 2 nuts onto the studs then you may need a proper stud remover.
