gday
after some info on body numbers as i have come across a mini which needs some work but i am unsure what it is as i cannot find body numbers on the fire wall or the radiator cowling. It has all the cooper s specs, twin tanks, 7.5 front discs, 1275 cooper s engine, spot welded flare mounts, thicker brake pedal, 120 mph speedo, rh tank mount spot welded, etc does anyone know if there were models with body numbers on different parts of the car or no body numbers at all????

there should be a number, but if there was a number on the rad cowling, and it had a bingle on the left hand side and they replaced the inner guard including rad cowling from an earlier car, then the number would be gone. Same as my second mini K.

Early MK2's (1969) had no compliance plate, just the body number on the rad cowl, so it could be one of them... check the tabs around the rear firewall for the right hand tank breather hose, and the hole under the rear seat for the fuel pump breather

without the numbers though, and a very good chance of being in a bingle - it's doubtful.. having flare mounts would mean it's a MK2, but I think they were rivetted, I'll check on my original '70 S tonight.

I had a Mini recently where on first glance there was no numbers on the rad cowl. It turned out that over the years the numbers had filled with dirt and usual crud, and the bay had been resprayed a few times....so it was like someone had filled in the numbers and smoothed over the top.

A good wire brush, flat blade screwdriver and persistance and they could be seen again.......

Could this be whats up with yours?

sounds good.... real or not, you'll have good fun with it ;)

back to figuring out if it's an S, you didn't mention an oil cooler, I assume there must be given the rest of the S stuff on it. is the lip on the rad panel neatly bent down with bracing strips coming up from the bottom of the scuttle panel

what's the engine number?

it has an oil cooler and the engine number is good, I found an identification guide on the net and it had every thing a cooper s had minus the body number, if it is not a S someone has gone to a lot of trouble. ill have to check the cowling lip tonight

going by my hunch on the flares and lack of numbers, it ought to have a 9FXEY engine, MK2...

check the bootlid as well, of course a bootlid can easily be changed, but there should be many small indents around the edge of the inside where there was a trim panel screwed on. If it does have the holes, give the lock mechanism a good clean, and there should be a date stamped on the upper edge of it, if it's '69 I reckon you might be on a winner, especially if it closely matches the date on the wiper motor and the fuse holder

without the flare moulds it wont be a Mk 2, not even an early one, therefore thenumbers should be 9FSAY........ My father has a very original early mk 2 (often called a MK1 1/2) It has a mix of both MK 1 and 2 parts on it. ie Mk 1 chrome shift, Mk 1 heater, Mk 1 booster and brake master cyl. The Block is a thin flange MK1 item with MK 2 numbers. The early ones also had the last 3 digits of the chassis no on the firewall behind the master cylinders. I also met a guy in Syd who has the very first MK 2 S ever made, and all this was the same.
Check under the rear seat vertical panel on the drivers side, there should be a small hole 8mm in diameter that has a plastic plug in it for the fuel pump breather. If it is S this hole will be there. G
