I agree with Graham, sounds like a 997 Cooper. Is there a chrome strip around the sliding windows? If so, it's a Cooper... or the doors are!

I have checked my number list, seems about right, but would be a late 997 late 63 or even into 64?, nearest car I have listed belongs to Bob Parker in Qld Rego FUN997!
Only other very very unlikely option is 1071S, but this would have gutter drain holes like little lips as described by others (UK Body).
Here's what the factory magic \wand sealing hole should look like (but not as rusty! )

Ignore the dipswiths, it's the wrong style, should be round, see gasket shape beneath!
Is the shell for sale???

if it was a pommy built one (and I doubt it), then it should have had the body number on a plate that was SPOT WELDED to the bonnet locking platform, near where the horn should have been mounted on (2 studs poking out, near the starter motor). There was a plate screwed to the radiator shroud, so look for 2 holes in it

the body number you gave me says it should be a 997 cooper too, being between 105 and 24143 built between 11/7/61 and 21/4/64 - so that's not much help

If it was aussie built, it would have been completely knocked down and assembled here, if the bolt holes for the seatbelts are in the upper T section of the pillars, then it's pre June '63, half way down and it's after that. The sunvisors on pommy cars changed from being centrally mounted to being mounted at the side in october '64, that may have been the same, dunno....

my book is not much help if it was aussie built, which I reckon it was

Roof gutter drains are the obvious giveaway, all Oz cars I've seen (including my 1961 Morris 850 with early UK seats) had 2 drilled holes each corner, the Pommy ones had a drain slot lanced down in a crescent shape.
