Got the rebuilt engine in and running. Immediately spewed oil out the transfer case, so gotta go back and do the primary gear seal.

A bit deflating after so much work, but whaddaya do. Bastard cars!

Finally dropped the front subframe and engine out and removed the steering rack. Just a bare shell now. Rotisserie build next.

I dyecheck crack tested some cranks for friends this week.
1x 1275 big journal
3x 1275S
2x 1098
1x 998.

Most checked fine.
One of the 1098 ones was cracked. It had been
reground to -0.010" by persons unknown and the fillet radii not maintained. BANG!
Be careful buying 1098 cranks, always crack test em first. Ditto 1275 ones.
But 998s seem more bulletproof.

Fixed an annoying rattle - turned out to be the 2 piece roof lining metal tabs that hadn't locked in and were rattling against each other at certain revs right above our heads.

Also fitted some sound deadening! Man, what a MASSIVE difference, with the singe biggest impact coming from lining the spare wheel and behind the rear seat. The drone that was pretty horrendous at almost any speed (to the point were I actually changed the rear muffler - but that made little difference) has all but disappeared. Also did some under bonnet deadening - all the floors and firewall were done during the build. I'm now thinking that it might be worth putting a radio in as I could probably hear it now!

Great result clip. I had a really annoying rattle in the dash area. Disconnected the speedo and no better.
Took the dash cards out and found the nut had dropped off the metal “L” bracket and was rattling away. Now I can actually hear the engine reving nicely.

Getting ready to change the old poly engine steady bushes to rubber also.

Time for some proper sound deader for me soon too.

I had no idea how much booming resonance was a result of the boot not being sound deadened. I stumbled across it when looking at the standard features of some of the Cooper S models, and they included sound deadening matting in the bottom of the spare wheel and under the rear parcel shelf.

And, 3 separate insulation pieces in the boot lid!

So who does that kit - and how does it compare to your previous one?

This is from jonspeed in the Uk, uses a better tensioning system, nicer finish on the welds.... obviously has a hif not a Chinese Weber. And about 2K cheaper
