Was changing oil on my daily driver Outback and went to fit the sump plug crush ring supplied by the Subaru dealer. It was the wrong size! What to do? Jumped in the mini, filled out the logbook, and zapped down and back before the dark storm clouds possibly dumped hail on my stranded Subaru and my precious mini! Mini saves the day!

Took the Cooper S to the Annual BMC/Leyland Heritage Day Reunion Lunch.

I also met a gentleman there who worked at the Zetland Factory and knew my Dad well, ...then worked out he not only worked in the same area in Engineering, but at the next layout table in the drawing office. :D

....then worked out he is a fellow Cooper S owner and is a regular on this forum!!! :D :D

As usual there was a small car display that always has an interesting mix of Leyland/BMC product. This lovely original 850 belongs to a member and there were some fine looking P76 including "one of only 10 built" Leyland P76 V8 Force 7v.

Radiator in the 850 and filled system with no leaks. Modified exhaust (Maniflow LCB, hot dog resonator and RC40 tailbox all fitted up and looking neat, with correct clearance around 850 starter solenoid and a few other jobs crossed off the list. Now to check the engine tappet and clutch throw out settings, static timing etc, try to get oil pressure and see if it goes (bang!).

Got my 850 started and new cam run in yesterday. Not without teething problems though. Engine started first try and runs like a Swiss swatch (well if a Swiss watch ever had a VP3 :). First try Facet fuel pump was p!ssing fuel everywhere. So had to strip that off the car to cure leaking fittings, spilling a shedload of fuel in the process. Not happy. Then with the motor running, one of the lower radiator mounting bolts was just rubbing on the harmonic balancer. Not good. So, radiator out (again) and faced off both bolts (nice having a lathe even though I'm crap at using it!). Then cracked one of the captive nuts off the radiator shroud when reassembling. Prepped for welding and rang a mate who stuck it back together for me.

At the end of the day, it was running nicely, and freshly washed. Now, if I could only find reverse gear... I'm sure it was there when the box was rebuilt!!

Made new flare backings and fitted them prior to painting the shell.

Should be there but on a trailer as I have run out of time to sort the last few bugs. Cheers

Finished fitting a set of proper Ripspeed Hi-Los to my 850 to get the ride height down to something that doesn't look ridiculous (looked like a cross between an Edwardian pram and a monster truck when I first dropped it onto its wheels!). Also fitted a pair of lower engine stabiliser bars to help control engine rock.

Still looking for reverse gear...

Bit of cleaning, looked at replacing the exhaust, bought a replacement with a dunce moment, ordered a original replacement via a contact of mercury mufflers (who had an original muffler on the shelf). Self didn't realize I have a full aftermarket system. oh dear.

Oh well you learn, spent the morning cleaning up instead, and found I have a LH lower engine steady bracket without the dogbone and no hole in the subframe :S. Note the Exhaust (downpipe + pipe + muffler (oval type) + tip) might come up for sale later if anyone is interested.
