I have an interesting issue with my indicators on my nearly completed 1969 Mk2 Cooper S.

Initially when I put the indicators on, the flasher would not click but the RH indicator bulb on the instrument panel glowed but not the LH indicator bulb. I checked all the light bulbs including the bulbs on the instrument panel and the parker / indicator lights on each corner - all OK. So I ordered a new flasher which arrived today.

Installed new flasher. Turned on the ignition,
RH indicator light on the dash glows constantly.
Indicate to turn right, No flasher click and the RH dash light dims slightly.
Indicate to turn left, RH dash light turns off and no LH light. No flasher clicking or indicator lights at each corner.

I don't know why, but I decided to install the old flasher unit and try it. Now everything works fine, except the LH dash light does not come on, Flasher clicks and all lights OK at each corner.
I swapped the Dash globes and it is the same, everything OK except for the LH dash light.

The old Flasher unit is a glass type and was zip tied to the old original tin can type.

Does the tin can type earth through the flasher body and through the bolt of the bracket that holds up the steering column?

The only thing that I have not tried is cleaning and tightening the clips that hold the LH dash globe.

To date, I have been able to use the search function and find an answer to any problem. However, this one has got me stumped.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd depends on the Speedo you have, but the bulbs for the Speedo indicator lamps can certainly be problematic. In my setup, the bulbs don't earth to the Speedo body, they have two wires going to them. Therefore they must be isolated from the Speedo body.

In my case they were easily shorting to the Speedo body, screwing up the indicator function in various ways. And it could be intermittent.

My advice is check if the bulbs in the Speedo housing have two wires going to them. If so, remove the bulbs from the Speedo house so they cannot earth. Test everything while they are out. It may well work fine then.

My experience with electrics is there is usually two things gone wrong to make things extra confusing, so there might be two issues at play haha :)

This pic was taken when I was re-wiring the binnacle. You might be able to see the indicator bulbs are wrapped in Tesa Tape to insulate them from the Speedo housing.Image

Just checked to find there is a single red with white tracer going to both dash indicator lights. The speedo is 120MPH Mark 2 type.

Standard bulbs? You haven't used LEDs or other wattage sizes?

If only one wire, maybe make sure they are firmly grounded to test.

Mk2 should have the green bulb holders pushed into the binnacle, not into the speedo itself.
Flasher can should be the three wire style, and I don't believe it needs to be earthed.

Ah yes, good point.

Fritzie, can you post a few pics?

My setup does not need the flasher unit earthed at all. I've replaced with the translucent blue Narva unit, works well.

I will take some photos and post tomorrow.

The flasher is 3 connector type. The car does not have the original oval barnacle and has been replaced with a woodgrain dash. I think that I have a spare 120MPH speedo, so I will check to see if it has holes for lights at the top.

Regards Fritzie

You are right, the indicator lights are not part of the speedo. I just went and did a quick check. They are separate and sit above the speedo in the woodgrain dash. No wonder the LH bulb did not alter when I changed the bulbs, as I was not changed the indicator bulbs at all. Some mothers do have 'em.

I will investigate the wiring to them tomorrow.

Labelled "68213"
I'l running std bulbs (not LEDs)
EDIT: when I google it, the exact one is called "68213BL" on the Narva website, even though the BL is not printed on the part itself. Electronic.

Hi Morbo28

Where did you get the large terminal connector in your speedo wiring setup and what is the brand? I am looking for a quality connector for this

These are Deutsch Connectors.
I've wired the whole car in them. Exceptional quality, waterproof. Easy to repin, add or remove wires.

In 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 pin connectors.

BL denotes blister pack (retail packaging)
