Hi, I'm in the process of rebuilding my rear wet subframe and a problem that I've known I need to deal with, but have been putting off, is replacing the knuckle joints on my rear displacer struts. The problem is that the knuckle joints are completely frozen to the displacer struts and I cannot get them off. I've tried using a rust penetrator like WD-40, but with no results. I've heard that heat might do the trick, but I'm not sure how that works in this application. Would I simply heat the area where the knuckle joint meets the displacer strut and then use a hammer to loosen it? I'd appreciate some advice on how any of you would go about solving this problem:) |

Leave it soaking in a molasses mixture. It will seperate then. It works on rusty threads with nuts! |

I heated mine. Slipped a spanner over the narrow part of the knuckle joint where the round part meets flat and whacked with BFH. Came out easy. |

I assume you mean getting the ball joint off the 3/4 inch round strut approx 13inches long? I have put the strut in the vice with the ball facing down, held a dolly against one side of the ball and hit the other side of the ball with a heavy blunt instrument (or BFH). The dolly helps direct the impact into the seized joint and not just push the whole strut sideways. |

Related hijack... I've got a front displacer where the knuckle joint is stuck inside the tapered alloy piston thingy. Out of the displacer. No way it will come apart. Have tried soaking with WD-40, hot air gun, etc. And the damned thing is tapered so can't get a good grip.. Top of piston is blind so I can't knock it out. Ideas? |

Was going to suggest drilling a hole in the back of the cone and punching the ball pin out, with some Penetrene etc? Afterwards, the drilled hole is completely covered by the rubber skirt of the displacer - or could be sealed with goo. |

Dr Mini if heating gun hasn't worked, how about MAPP torch/oxy level of heat (applied hot and fast, rather than slow and low so the differential heat can also play a part as well as high heat)? And perhaps the same for the original poster? |

Would sitting them in boiling water work? Different rates of expansion? |

Drmini believe it or not i have had this exact thing this week. In my case holding the cone and striking the knuckle slowly rotating it to get all sides .....eventually loosed it . Was able to pull it out. No vice needed except beer. Problems: - takes good aim - bad aim results in sore fingers Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
