The Elder 7 port head i have seen was full of poristy holes and it failed the pressure test twice. Most of the holes tho, can be welded up to fix. there is also a mixture of UNF & metric threads. the head is new but has been sitting around for some time so i guess it was one of the eairler castings.

It's a shame you can't shape the ports now and then glue it back together!
When you look at the siamese exhaust port, what is the reason for not casting it with a longer center divider section?

One of these would be right at home on top of my stroker 8)

It'll be quite interesting to see how it performs on the dyno

So is it the inability to sort it out via a warranty claim like a normal person would do? Or the need to grind an axe in a public forum?

Having the guts to innovate is the action to be applauded, like the big three contributors to the thread.
Taking the low road by denigration is certainly the least of the talents on offer....

Unfortunately I was not the original purchaser of the head, it has been passed around to a few different people and now i have the job of building a engine with it. If i thought there were going to be problems with the head i would of sent it back before we started porting/preparing it.

like I have said in the past, I have nothing against the people that made the head or the people that sell them, i am just letting people know in my experence, they are not as perfect as they are made out to be.

People are too quick to judge on this forum, I tell it how it is and have no hidden agendas, im just trying to help people with less experence than I.

A general question:
how are valve prevented from 'waering' in the seats on an alloy head? I guess the need hardened seats of some sort!? Or is the alloy used harder than what I have in mind? :)

Verry interesting topic! I learned much from it! :) Thanks!

Cheers,
Jan

Doc that sounds like words from an ex railee. We use to say "there is two ways of doing something, the right way and the Railway".
Now back to the head as I am glued to this and loving it, keep it coming GR.

Yep you got me, I did my F&M apprenticeship there back in the steam age. 1963-67. :P

Haha!! Railways....... I unfortunately work for them presently and I always thought there was 3 ways of doing things, "The right way, The wrong way and the Railway.
By the looks of it that head is the right way!

Awesome heads aswell!

After the heads are cast they go from the foundry to the machine shop where they are machined with a CNC machining centre. From there the valve inserts are fitted and the valve guides. Then the heads are ported and the valve seats cut. The chambers can then be milled to size.

Looking good! I gether from the above that the porting is still a manual task or do you have access to some funky 5-axis machine that can reach into those ports?

Speaking of porosity, my MX-5's head has plenty or aero-bar style holes in the cam bearing surfaces. Not pretty but no problems for the last 110,000km.

Again speaking of porosity a mate of mine used to work in a die casting plant making bits for Aus assembled fords, holdens and whatevers. They were so screwed on margin they couldn't afford decent machines or decently trained operators. They had a station at the end of the line where the Devcon was applied before the castings went off for machining. So your brand new (in 1995 it was) Ford transmission was swiss cheese and Devcon, same with your water pump housing etc. etc.

If all the production heads are like the one above, they'll be better than some car companies turn out.

PS. I wish I'd won the $106 million last Tuesday, I'd buy a couple of engines each from GR, MR, DR and DrM and put them back to back on a dyno, then flog them for a while, strip them down and do a wear assessment & crack test, then publish the result. It certainly would have been a way to clear up who can piss higher.

M

Hi MG
If the divider was extend into the port any further it would start to
block the exhaust flow of to much as it is now i can get more than
enough flow out of the centre exhaust (it will more than match the
two outer exhaust ports.

Hi Jan
The head is fitted with the latest valve inserts that are wery hard
and shrunk into the head with 6 to 7tho interferance fit so they
will not come out

A little bit of info
With the very early elder heads (8 ports ones) the foundry had trouble
with gassing because of the complex casting there for some of the heads
had problems with porousity all of these heads were put through the
Loctite prosess which sealed the heads t o stop them from leaking
BUT if the heads are over HEATED or WELDED it will loose the effect
of the loctite and will have to be done again
