I believe it takes any sort of mini valves, so if the buyer wants rimflo's, then they can have them... obviously if you're shelling out for the head & setup, the little bit extra for the valves wouldn't hurt much

In the days when I was regularly working on Mini's I made the following references in discussions

John - Mini King
Glenn - Mini (mechanic at Mini King)
GR - God

ala - friend, "who were you on the phone to Daniel.."

me, "I was on the phone to God to find out what compression ratio I should be using with this cam, but earlier I was talking to Mini King about bits for my gearbox after Mini helped me get it apart..."

Only makes 121 ft-lb and needs 9300 rpm to get to the 194hp.

C'mon GR, show em how its really done

cheers

ha,,, there are faster engines out there , 220hp is what i`ve heard over the last few years.

But,,, that particular engine (the KAD one that Mick posted) is still being held up,,, you only have to listen to it,,, it`s still not screeming "clean" yet,,, & the last 1/4 of the throttle isn`t really doing much, tells me that there`s still heaps more to come from that engine,,, maybe more cam & Port design work could be sorted,,, & could certainly do with a pile more comp ratio

Maybe they need a faster dyno?

Hi Michael
No Worries,But with a motor that size i would hope to see
135/140ftlb of torque with the elder head, my group NC motor
is making 123ftlb of torque and thats a 5port 1360cc but im
30 hp short of that KAD motor well done to the boys at KAD
.
Yes Matt there are motors in england making 220hp but not
KAD or 16 valve motor bike heads (NA) give the boys at KAD
some credit there no fools, and they do their home work, they
are a very smart bunch of guys and i dont think there would
be any one in england that would make more hp out of the
KAD motor than them, been there and met them they were
going to make and market my manifolds in england back in
1993.

oh yeah,,,sorry if i sounded like i wasn`t impressed, please forgive me & i really mean that,,, i was only going on the sight, sound & feel of the donk on the dyno,,, & seems to me the thing isn`t quite free spinning (for whatever reason(s)

that`s all

& please don`t anyone try to start telling me about 9300 isn`t spinning,,, i know what 9300 feels & sounds like

i do tend to go more on the "Feel" of an engine quite a lot & i really didn`t mean to make out like i could do better,,, definately not,,, so for anyone reading this--> please understand that point,,, i havn`t made anywhere near that sort of grunt in my life (yet) :-)

my point was more towards the fact that i just feel that there is more to come from that N/A KAD donk

Yeah Graham, that is what I meant by "only 121 ft-lb"

Using your estimates of peak torque:

121 ft-lb at 6500 is "only" 150hp

130 ft-lb at 6500 is 161hp

140 ft-lb at 6500 is 173hp

take 130 ft-lb up to 9000 and you get a whopping 222hp

and 140 ft-lb at 9000 is 240hp if you could maintain that torque at that end of the rev range (not saying you can't, but everything is compromised somewhere!)

All hypothetical of course, but it shows that it is possible to hold on to your money Graham  .

I think you have one advantage over the KAD guys in that you are doing both the head and camshaft - they had to get Piper to make the camshafts for them, so maybe not as optimised as it could be?

I also notice that KAD are using 12.5:1 compression on Shell Optimax for that engine.

What compression and fuel would you need to run to get your 130/140 ft-lb ?

cheers
michael

Hi Michael
You need to make 108ftlb of torque to make 194hp @9300rpm
I only use 11.5/11.8 compression ratio in all my race engines
if you have a very efficient cylinder head you dont need big
compression(static)because the more you jam in the cylinder
the higher the compression you have when the mixture is
compressed, thats why F3 cars with there restrictorin the inlet
run 18to1 comp because theres nothing in the cylinder to
compress so the less there is in the cylinder the more you have
to compress it to get it to go bang.
like your standard mini when crusing on light throttel with
your vacume advance hooked up your running sum where near
70deg advance and you could run 16to1 with no problems
because theres nothing in the cylinder to burn, but it wouldnt
be happy if you put your foot down

This is the inlet manifold for the 7 Port Ken Elder head. It will go under the bonnet of a clubman (just) roundnoses need a bump on the bonnet :P

These are the new valves, the angle on the back of the valve has been changed for better flow.

This photo is showing the centre exhaust and the route it has to take to get out on the original 8-Port Head

It's not as bad as it looks as it flows quite well.

This is the 7 Port for comparison:
