Scissor type is best, it doesn't stuff up the ball joint rubbers.. 8)

Steve

Scarey thing I did the same to the traveller on Saturday as someone had borrowed my ball joint seperator. One slip of the hammer and oh bugger, went out bought new seperator 3 twists and pop under 30 seconds. Fortunately not quite as bad as yours but almost (Freaky)

Steve, i actually have a ball joint splitter.....but the lower still wasn't budging, and the top joint was resonably difficult at first as well............

Ok.....recieved the low down on the "method" for getting them off........... from the masterful Mr Jack Read........... even he can still get them off at his age  . Made me feel very, very small and useless to see a sixty-something old man knock the ball joint off first go

I still reckon that it's all bull though.......... he reckons that you hit on the side of the arm............. thus creating a millisecond where the shaft is loose, then the arm drops...... i was using the old loosen the nut until it is flush with the top of the peg.... then hit....... :?

Still unsure though :?

Jack Read is right. I did it for years like that until I bought a puller.
No more sore thumbs now...

Put a heavy hammer directly opposite wher you can hit the side of the arm and hit once very hard with another hammer. One hit and it is off. This method actually distorts the eye of the arm for a very short time and breaks the taper. I have never used or had a ball joint splitter.
