You may be able to clean the thread up with a file.

Put a heavy hammer directly opposite wher you can hit the side of the arm and hit once very hard with another hammer. One hit and it is off. This method actually distorts the eye of the arm for a very short time and breaks the taper. I have never used or had a ball joint splitter.

Chris!!!!!! Exactly what i was trying to say earlier but had no idea how to put it................

Bought ball joints this arvo.... upper and lower for $50.... so will be putting back together later this week once i fix the damn diff seal........

I still reckon that it's all bull though.......... he reckons that you hit on the side of the arm............. thus creating a millisecond where the shaft is loose, then the arm drops...... i was using the old loosen the nut until it is flush with the top of the peg.... then hit....... :?

Still unsure though :?

my grandfather does this.. it does work quite well. doesnt always work though.. you can bash n bash.. and nothing.. then bash the top..

ive had a ball joint stick so bad that i hit the nut hard enough to push it down the thread on the ball joint.. after i broke a scissor type splitter.. i thought the bugger would never come off.. at this point in time the ball joint was toast.. i pulled out the oxy and heated the arm up a little.. one bam and she was off..

i think ball joints are one of my least favorite jobs.. if not the least fav

I was reading this thread and something occured to me. Most people try and remove ball joints with the car to low. What this does is make it awkward verging on impossible tp do the job easily. Get the car as high as possible so that you have a comfortable working position and are not folded up under the front guard with no room to work.

I think I have a thread from about 1/2 through last year detailing how I did the same thing. If there's something you're thinking about ****ing up, ask me cause chances are I've probably done it.
