Try adjusting them first - it's the most likely cause & it's free if you do it yourself :)
Replacing dodgy hoses is a good idea but... (ever tried to stop a minimatic just using the handbrake - scary)

Mike

PS Don't knock drums, they're fine for a road mini

Can't judge the hoses by looking. Our Clubbie had a lazy LH one- would pull to the right then stop straight.
Take the drums & shoes off, then see if you can spin the pistons in the cylinders. If not it's new cylinder time..

When the drum is off, gently prise back the wheel cylinder rubbers and look for evidence of weeping. Also look at the linings for evidence of brake fluid impregnation (BFI!!!) ....because BFI will cause the brakes to grab.

I cured one bad case of this once (when I was poor) by removing the shoes...putting them in a shallow tin full of petrol...and lighting the match.

I do not recommend this approach!!!

However, it seemed to dry out the linings and I never had any other trouble with them with the new wheel cylinders.

pops pulls up really well with drums...... it's an urban myth that drums are cr@p....

I beg to differ... "really well" ..i'm sorry but you can't use those words in the same sentence with drums...;) I said so.

They're adequate..that's about all..they do the job. Going down galston gorge, they'll last about 2-3 hair pins before you have just about no brakes at all...ask me how i know

They're a pain to keep in check and adjusted..sure they will stop you well in an emergency one off, but repeated hard braking and they're useless.

That said they're is nothin wrong with them on a road car....

Anton, i'll have to give you a drive of a car with brakes that stop "really well" ;) cause if drums stop really well, then 9" discs must be the bees knees 8) ;)
