Benjamin the speedo cable is such a bitch of a job on a mini cause it is right down on the gearbox and yopu have to route it so it doesn't go across the manifold and so it doesn't have any kinks in it the best idea is to but the mini on wheel ramps then when it is up there you put it on jack stands to get it up as high as possible and then take your passenger side wheel off you should be able to see the connection to the gearbox from there if you shine a torch on it what you then do is dangle the speedo cable down to where it is to go and the rest is preety self explainitary.

hope this helps

Pat

Sorry forgot to add the price of a speedo cable is around $30 to $40 and you should be able to order it from mini spares in sydney the number is 02 9774 3366 and they are at 80 Gibson Ave in Padstow

I had to find out the hard way to replace a broken one I took the radiator out instead of thinking about it *ooppss* oh well it still works that is the main thing

Oh by the way if you are going to do it the way I said it is best to do it on a cold engine cause working down there when it is hot is not a nice experiance I found that out the hard way also

I did mine at the same time as i did the lower pulley....

I've dont it Mini_Vans way, and this way is quicker and LESS painfull...

Take out the radiator.... the speedo cable is there in front of you then....
Ok, so you have the lower-radiator hose to deal with, but the speedo cable is easier !

Now there is a logical question and the answer IMHO is yes it would be so much easier to do it that way because if you take the radiator out you have to stuff around with the radiator brakets and that is just to hard so wait till the extractors go on it will be far easier

If you get pulled over by the dept of transport and get an on the spot road worthy then no it is not alright to drive with out a speedo cable but if you are just going down to the shop to get some bread and milk then I wouldn't think that would be to bad but if you got pulled over by the D.O.T you would be as they say ****** german for the F word.

I had to replace mine a few weeks ago and i removed the radiator and it was easy to get at, beats undoing the engine mounts.
