Look on your windscreen wiper motor, and that will give you an approximate year. Some seem to be a year out though. If not there look on the fire wall for the chrome tag, it should tell you there!

Some early Minis had acode on the winscreen to show the build date...

Is there no tally plate on the left side firewall... :?

Everything electrical has a date on it.
Generator
Starter
Wiper motor
Ignition switch
Dip switch
Light switch
Wiper switch
Regulator

Look at all the dates and guess a couple of weeks after the last date. (Unless one item is out by a couple of years!)

The paint colour is also a clue to the date. Some colours were only used in one year.

Did all 850s have the full front valance? I think so....

...there were of course Commercials fitted with 850 running gear.

850s built after Deluxe came in `65, had the cutouts too. Most were badged Morris Mini Minor..

Yep, that's how I figured out the year model of my 850. My paint colour was only used in 1962

Thats great thanks everyone, got a few things to check when I get home now. When you say "tally plate" does this mean the plate on the firewall with the engine number, body number and paint code on it, if so this is on there but has no date.
Thanks again.

Steve.

My build plate has no date - only the ADR Minis had a date on them AFAIK. I figured out that my Deluxe is a 65 because the colour was only offered in that year, and you can also check the body number against records too (at least I did for the Deluxe).

If you tell me the chassis number and engine number I may be able to give you a rough date of delivery.

http://www.ozcooper.com.au/paint_codes.htm Have a look here it may help. There's other useful stuff but it's mostly Cooper.

Anto.

Thanks again, I had a look at the paint codes and it looks like the paint was only used up until '64, so that is something. This is what is on the plate on the firewall
Type- YKA2S1
car no.- 40715
engine no.- 8AM/U/H 615580
Steve.

Those numbers put it at around 12/63 date of delivery. Don't know how date of delivery compares with the actual manufactured date, but I wouldn't think they would be that different.

Don't know about the YKA2S1, 850s are YMA2S1, Coopers are YKA2S1, but then they don't have 850 motors.

I did wonder about the engine number and car type, i saw they didn't match. I did put an earlier post on the board about that , but no luck. Thanks again for that Anto.
