i have just bought 4 new gears.

I have some old stock Genuine Synchro rings that have done 10,00k's

they grab on all the gears bar 2nd gear.

it just turns and turns with no bite like the others, is this normal?

could i have a faulty 2nd gear?

i can't see a problem they look to be made to a very high grade.

we are going to order some old stock GENUINE rings to check it's not my rings.

anyone had a problem at all? is it something to even worry about?

im leaning towards it being my bulk rings though.

cheers.

There should be a .030"-.040" gap between the baulk ring and the gear's dogs.
If there is none on that 2nd gear only, the gear is a dud- not the rings.

2nd gear is a common one to dud too, people thrash it. Dropping back to second in high revs it wears the hardening on the gear.

check the hardening around the gear and see if its worn. check all the baulk rings on that second gear, you may find that your baulk rings are slightly worn too.

obviously put the one with the largest gap on that second gear

NG said it is a NEW 2nd gear. Wouldn't be the 1st time someone's been sold a dud- I bought a crook new aftermarket mainshaft a few years ago. It had .015" endfloat on 2nd gear.

No I mean Brand SPANKING new :)

i can spin the ring on all other gears turn the gear upside down & it holds onto the ring.

2nd gear wont grab, if i do this it will just drop off.

im not sure if thats important i was told thats a good way to check as well?

will check gap.

That don't mean much.

Both features are needed. If it don't grip the gear, it won't work.
I've had brand new aftermarket baulk rings that passed the gap test OK, but you could rock them about sideways on a good gear. Their taper angle was wrong, and they were oval too.
I put one on 2nd gear in Barney, it took 5000km to bed in and work properly (sort of) on downshifts .

I would guess the taper on your 2nd gear is too small diameter, or its angle wrong.

I have had many NEW gears and baulk rings (all genuine) that don't 'grip', yet work fine. Angles, 'roundness' etc all OK it was the finish and coating on the cone of the gear.

Just been thinking about what I wrote here and it maybe a bit misleading, apologies if it is.

The 'grip' of new baulk rings to the cone on the gear, new out of the box is not what I would pay attention to, but as the Doc has said ^ the Angles are very important, as is the back clearance.

Mini spares seem to think that my gear will be fine.

that only the gap is all i need to worry about and that the ring is not holding on will not make no difference??

it's making my situation tricky now as some say it's ok and some say it is not.

how on earth can you check the taper etc? by eye?

Is the gear genuine or not?

They are 'tricky' to measure accurately with 'normal' workshop measuring equipment, as they surface area of the cone is small. I measure the large and small diameters (next to the dog teeth and away from the dog teeth) and the height and then calculate it. The baulk rings are even more difficult tp measure. Others here might have a different way

<EDIT> Also, when the baulk ring is fitted up to the cone by hand, how does it feel compared to the other gears? Does it tighten and feel seated or slippery and 'loose', does it rock around?
