Yeah, Starlet GT or the Honda VTEC

For cost & ease of installation, I'd go the Starlet GT.
Honda B16A motors are hard to get & cost an arm & a leg if you can find one, but offer fantastic normally aspirated performance in factory form. There's one on Autospeed at the moment that's been worked ($20,000 worth) to pump out 181kW - that's 241hp!
<edit> At 9,500rpm, with a redline of 10,000rpm !
http://autospeed.com/cms/A_2498/article.html

Also Toyota parts are heaps cheaper (generally speaking - I know there are exceptions) than Honda or morbike parts.

Still, I'd love a Hyabusa Turbo powered mini

It was a while ago but I had seen a group that were putting camry and corolla engines into minis

There was a place in Sydney I think that did them but this was in a magazine some 10 or 13 years ago but from what I remember the mini had lumps and bumps all round the bonnet
(like it had been working out ) :P

2 litres for a camry engine would get you in just below the rego restrictions that Brad (I think) posted up a while ago

I reckon that would be a good conversion I reckon the camry engine is a good one

What I would really like though is a AWD mini with minimal body mods I reckon that would be awesome, and none of the twini mini stuff (I don't really like the idea of two engines)

An AWD mini would be able to actually use the power generated by more modern engines without too much wheel spin.

I like AWDmokes conversion but it looks like a hell of a lot of work.
maybe I will get around to doing it someday

The other options for AWD were:
electric engine at rear wheels
hydralic power to the rear wheels similar to current AWD motorbikes but apparently heat becomes a problem.

Yair, too much work

Like the idea of a hybrid mini & have thought about it a bit.
Replace the IRS on the mini with the smallest diff & highest ratio you can find.
Mount the dif with the input flange vertical instead of facing forward.
Mate electric motor directly to input flange of dif.
Using only a smallish DC motor & battery combo with no controller, just an on/off contactor with a momentary on switch when you floor the throttle.

Would just mean a hole in the boot floor & some messing around with batteries.
Let me know how you go, I'm only allowed one project car at a time

for some vtec fun, if you stick the b16a head onto the b20 block you'll have yourself 195kw of NA fun. bit of a fiddle with some water and oil ways but it's (alegedly) relatively simple :)

Hi guys!

I've been doing a bit of research about little 1.3 efi engines. I haven't really looked for "blow you away" performance, but just something that is EFI, more powerful than a mini engine, inexpensive and widely available in Australia.

I considered the following:

Suzuki: 13BA (Swift non-GTi) 1.3 ??kW $???? (carby)

Daihatsu: ED-EL (Mira) 660cc ~40kW (not much more powerful than a mini)
HC-E (Charade) 1295cc 61kW $500 EFI

I like the last option -> HC-E charade engine. For something that will be reliable, smooth, cheaper than $1000, good to use as a daily driver, and still light on petrol.

What do you guys think? I know that performance-wise, it's no comparison to a 4efte, a g13b, or one of those turbo charades (CB70), but HC-E looks like an ok option as a modern engine to prolong the life of a not-so-modern car.

have a look at www.morrismini.com - I haven't updated it for a while, but that's exactly what I'm working on right now - I'm copying the setup used on the ute on www.ringmini.de

That's just a K series with mods. The Elise now comes with some sort of Toyota motor to enable it to reach emission standards in the US. The K series is also fitted to the MGF now RIP. Also a turbo version was made for the MG sedans. Went hard according to pommy road tests.

Elise motor is now the same as current Celica, I believe.

Yep, that's right Kev,

I read an article a while back about it and they weren't totally against the celica engine either.

Rather docile until the VVTi cut in and then it let fly. If you wanted a Elise motor then it is probably cheaper to get it out of a Celica
