but i tape a speaker magnet on the side of the oil filter everytime i change it

Why?

If it has a spin off filter....you chuck it away...

If it has a standard filter....you dissassemble the whole thing, clean it, put a new filter element in it, some oil, then whack it back on...

You really want the magnets doing their job WHEN the engine is running BETWEEN oil changes....removing metal and crud from the system........better lubrication, less wear.

By all means, stick a long magnet into the sump plug a few times to try and grab stuff resting on the bottom of the sump...when you do an oil change...

Mick,
A magnet anywhere in the system will pick up some or all of the fines that will go thru the filter paper. You would be real lucky if it filtered below than 50 micron size, anything less than this just goes thru the filter then around and around..
I was amazed when I cut up my filter (that had a magnet on it) just how much crud the magnet had trapped. And it was all fine stuff. 8)

I did an oil change last weekend and saw something that I have never seen before and it worried me.

There was no metal on the sump plug magnet!

Does that mean the motor is run in  or does it mean the motor is worn out :?
I mean if it has run out of little bits of metal something has to be wrong!

Totally concur....of course....yeah just re-read the other fellas post....I read it as him tapeing a speaker magnet on during the oil change process...wot tha...wot was I thinking :!: :!:

With an A-Series I would have all the magnets I could have about the place....the oil has to do a lot of work!

apologies to 68matic...damn English language :!:

I assume that the outside of a filter cartridge is the "clean" side of the filter so anything that a magnet catches when it's stuck to the outer casing has already made it through the filter - bonus gunk!!

Nope the oil goes in from the outside. Inside is the clean side..
As I said the gunk the magnet catches here is the real fine stuff.
You will also notice less fine stuff on the sump plug one.

Dr Mini,
Thats a good idea. where can you pick these magnet attachments for ???
Do they just screw in the outsides??????\
cheers.

Cheap here-
http://search.ebay.com.au/rare-earth-ma ... 1QQfromZR8
They just sit there, they are so strong! the force field goes thru the case of the filter and traps the crud inside.
Don't get 'em within a few feet of your credit cards, or zappo!

hey Kev, what size do you use - I might buy a heap of them to keep all the crap on the fridge from falling off!

I use 20mm dia x 10mm ones `coz my previous employer does..
25mm dia ones would be better still.
