When changing your oil, how long do you let it drain with the plug out before putting it back in?

I face the car downhill and drive LF wheel onto a housebrick.
Then I drain it until it's stopped dripping, or down to 1 drip every 10 secs or so.
The thicker the oil the longer it takes.

What I do is change the oil after running the engine for a few minutes to warm it up - I leave the plug out for several hours - when it's stopped dripping, I jack up the left side of the car to make sure all the old oil comes out, not quite the same as the Doc. :D

 Could always reverse the left wheel up the car ramp :D

Yeah run the car so it's warm first. Just jack up the left wheel is enough for me...

Which reminds me, I need to change oil soonish I think

i get the car warm, take the top filler cap off, then remove the sump plug. I will let it drain for as long as it takes....even if it means coming back later after changing a few nappies and picking up toys/food/rubbish off the floor for an hour!

I let mine drain for three months last time

Of course it was off the road waiting for a rebuild!

In addition to the methods used by the Doc etc, I also used to pour fresh oil in the top and let that drain out also. Not sure if it did anything, but I was only using valvoline at the time. Cheap as.

Make sure you change your filter every time as well. Vital on our little beasts that share oil between the engine and gearbox.

Cheers
Matt

HAHA at Josh.
Youre bringing out the Kettle Chip sculpturer or the Woolworths Cherry picker
out in me!

it takes me about 2 hours to drain my sump.
I go about it in a humble and religious sequence,
in silence and utter elaborate detail.

except when i drive the thing too hot
and am forced to curse under my breath
when getting the bastard plug off
or when i take the plug off and a surge of oil goes up my sleeve
or when i take the plug off and see its covered in metal filings
or when i spill oil down the back of the engine
ARGH
but
I love changing the oil in Herman
I love the loud rattles that dissipate into a quiet hum when the new oil courses through the veins and valve stems and tappets
I love the aromous golden liquid that cascades into the filler hole and the faint line that magically appears above "MIN" and under "MAX" when you tilt the level stick in the light.
I love how I dont have grass against the edges of my fence, even better as I dont have a whipper snipper

hehe matic boy here told me he waits two hours, so i was curious :P

It seemed a long time..enough time to go cut some kettle chips 8) , I just jack up the left hand side as well and usually just wait till it's dripping every few seconds or so..that's like 10-15min..??

I change it every 3,000km...with the filter..

yeh this is when i found out that i didnt have a sealing plate in my oil filter housing, mustve thrown it out with the oil filter once.

but im hoping that with it, it will actually catch the metal filings.

and yeh i do as the Doc says, oil every 1000miles and i do the filter as well.

Regardless of how long you leave the plug out to let the oil drain, make sure you PUT THE BASTARD BACK IN BEFORE you add new oil

On the up side, new oil doesn't stain concrete as bad as yukky old oil

Cheers,

Damo.

HAHA! I just had to do a double take.

On the Mini Chat main page, I read

"How long do you let your oil drain for?"

and then

"3 Months..."

I was like WHAT THE...!

Davo, if you take it for a run to get it HOT it'll only take 1/2 an hour to drain!
