I always do any oil change after a descent run to get the oil HOT.

Sometimes you have to wait a 5-15 Minutes to be able to touch the sump plug....but hey....just let it drop into the used oil if needs be....it ain't gunna hurt it and you dont get scalded by hot oil.

Just clean the plug thoroughly before putting it back in.

Drain for as long as you can....I go away and do other jobs. The more black gunk you get out the better as far as I'm concerned. I have left em overnight!!

i like the idea of flushing it with some cheap oil. supermarket stuff would do the job.

what about wearing gloves so you dont get scalded by the oil???? just riggers or something, maybe something to protect your arm

I get my car hot, not warm. The crud that you want to flush out will drain better with hot oil.

I use a socket to undo the sump plug and I use an extension bar on the socket so I don't have to touch the hot drain plug.

Do not over tighten the sump plug, you will strip the thread in the gearbox. My sump plug is drilled for lock wire because the thread in the gearbox is dodgy.

 When you clean the magnet on the sump plug sit the sump plug on the rocker cover so that you will see it if you try to fill the engine before re-fitting the plug.

Has any one out there pulled the old "magnet glued to the oil pickup" trick in order to trap up extra metallic gunk?

I have 2 rare earth magnets (20mm dia) attached limpet fashion to the sides of the spin-on filter. They trap lots of fine stuff, so U get hardly anything on the sump plug one.
I know they work, I cut a filter up to check... 8)
When you change the filter you just bung them on the new one.

has anyone switched their filter housing/attachment from the cannister style to the screw-on style to make life easier? is that a hard thing to do? 'cos it seems a right ning nong of a job with the cannister.

It's just a magnet that sticks to the outside of the filter. Believe me, they do not need any other support! Rare earth magnet = friggen strong magnet!

Just don't get two rare earth magnets and let them go when they start to attract to each other. They shatter.

That is such a good idea, Doc. Magnets... Just like sticking them onto your metre box... LOL!

Cheap here-
http://search.ebay.com.au/rare-earth-ma ... 1QQfromZR8
They just sit there, they are so strong! the force field goes thru the case of the filter and traps the crud inside.
Don't get 'em within a few feet of your credit cards, or zappo!

I still get little bits of filament on the sump plug..:( Even with that rediculously strong magnet..haha my motor must be destroying itself, would it matter if the magnet is on the bottom of the filter, rather than the sides? mine ends up underneath even if i put it on the sides though..

hmmm...maybe i need two...or three

you ideally want to flush with the same oil as you run in the engine =
flush valvoline with valvoline..
it doesnt take much contamination to reduce the effectiveness of the oil.

i always try to wear a glove when i am doing the oil change

IMO, flushing is a waste of money, you would do better to use a cheaper oil and change more often. Like every 1500 miles.... :)

I'm now using Valvoline SF 20W/50 in my new 1360 motor- oil pressure is still 70psi after a freeway run (no cooler yet), it holds pressure better when hot than Castrol GTX2 does. Cheaper too.

Josh, it doesn't matter where the magnet sits on the filter- it will just drag the swarf with it if it moves..

i agree, i'd only bother to flush if i was running mobil 1 in a high performance high tech engine or something like that.
