In my cabinet, I notice when the garnet is wearing out that there is more dust than blasting going on.

Twenty five dollars for a new bag of garnet isn't much to pay. I've used two bags in 4 years.

With the seam sealent Ive had no prblems just chipping it off with a small chisel, comes off in large pieces with no residue.

Havent realy tackled the body deadner but the oxy torceh seems to be removing lots around my repairs.

I have a "spot" blaster from supercheap, basicly a cheap suction type paint pot but with some angled attachments and a bag so the sand doesnt spray but is kept and recollected by the bag. ala this:[url]

I wouldnt recomend these just get a gravity fed one and deal with the mess.
Which BTW gets EVERYWHERE do not do it anywhere near lathes or any precision tools as a spec of garnite traped in the slides will ruin them.

There is also a brand called MBX who released an identical machine called a bristle blaster.

the racers use dry ice to get rid of the body deadener. just grab 10kg from BOC gas and leave a chunk sitting on the offending area for a while then give it a whack with a rubber mallet and the now brittle deadener just breaks off. not so useful in those hard to reach corners, but gets the majority done.

cheers

Last time a stripped a shell I tried heaps of stuff.

Best Results

Dirt: Hot water high pressure blaster, it's amazing how much dirt is in a mini. It also gets paint of deadener and sealer, lifts paint on edges and gives a clean starting point for the following:

Paint: 40 Grit sandpaper all panels to scratch down to the metal no less then 20mm between scratches, then coat with paint stripper and cover with clingwrap till all paint is wrinkled. Use spatula and start pealing back glad wrap and scraping from one corner. Works bloody well

Seam sealer: chip off with cold chisel and hammer (already been said in this thread and it works)

Body sealer: old towel soaked in diesel, lay on the body area and leave for the day. If you are doing this inverted use magnets (lots) to hold the towel on. Next day it simply wipes off and it's cleaner and easier then mechanical brushes or heat and scrape.

hope that helps

I built one of these from an old oil tank found in the old houses, it's great and cost nothing. The expense was in the rubber gloves...

There are blasting guns that will take dry ice beads and blast that. It is amazing and there is nothing but the body sealer to clean up. I watched a crew do the underside of a passenger train carriage once. It was stainless and coated with about 3mm of that non-hardening tar stuff for sound deadening. Dry ice was the only method to get in all the corners and not poison the workshop staff. Brilliant. The guys that did it wore head-to-toe ppe and made sure there was plenty of fresh air.
