I think you have to look at England and not Australia. Maybe what was under the bonnet of the Princess 1100 and the big Austins and Wolseleys.

Are you thinking they imported the insulation mats?

The part number looks like a UK number.

Was flipping thru Mini Minor down under book and found a good period shot of similar material fitted to a GT.

Wow,

I just realized that I have never seen an original bonnet lining on a car before - I guess they must have fallen off pretty quick - maybe the glue was really crap, even though there are many cars with the glue remnants remaining!

Do you notice the difference in cabin noise between the two cars?

I've created a thread on the Mini Cooper Register as this was a UK part and should be known by the Mini community over there. We'll see what happens.

The Morris 1100 has a similar looking sound proofing pad running on the inside of the firewall.
It is like an impregnated fibreboard/cardboard with insulation behind it.
I will see if I can get a photo.

I don't think it's the glue that was the problem. The material itself is very fragile and is prone to catch on any wayward tools, parts or fingers that come into contact with it. The result is that a section tears and hangs down. Eventually it becomes so ragged that the only option is to pull it all off.

I poked the camera under the dash of an 1100 and got this poor photo of some of the stuff in the 1100. Pity I didn't get the edge of it better.

No, that looks like coir matting. The Cooper S mat is almost exactly like Pink Batt ceiling insulation material but thinner and a different colour. It's extremely light too, just like fibreglass insulation. The only place I've seen it is under the Cooper S bonnet.

I agree it is rare to see the original mat still in a car but the photos on page one of this thread are of my green S and it still has the mat and the car has done around 110,000 miles. Its tatty but its still there!
The material is as Winabbey says, pink bat but yellow rather than pink.

I Am sure they were Imported From The UK and I am also sure they were moulded,
Many Many Years Ago I had these new old stock, I have for some time thought of having them made But I do not have a good Sample to work From
