Just went and had a look at mine. Compared to the pics mine is in reasonable original condition although not concourse by any stretch of the imagination. The aircleaner has been pressing up against the sound proofing for 40+ years and has gouged abit of a line across the soundproofing but no sign of any moulded depression for the aircleaner.
Its worth noting that in my first S, 1966 build, the aircleaner didn't touch the soundproofing at all. Well that's my memory of it as I was always a bit p'd off that it did on the 68.

Regards
RonR

Better photo, does this look like the Cooper S stuff?

That is the same material (hessian backed underfelt) used for insulation on the underside of the rear parcel shelf on Cooper and Cooper S models.

Anyone know if this material is still available?

Could just spray some hessian to look just like that.

Is it the same as the Hessian used on the underside of the turret?

Reviving an old thread....

Has anyone found out anything about these since this was last discussed?

Anyone come across or found out what they were made of? etc

Yes.

According to the factory drawing:

Material: Phenolic resin bonded fibreglass uniformly coated with neoprene paint to bind loose glass fibres.
Density 4 - 6 lbs per cu. ft.
Interlaminar adhesion 0.25 lbs / sq. inch minimum
Phenolic resin 15% nominal by weight

No idea what the above description means in practice. I think there's a few people on here with reasonably unmolested originals that could perhaps be used as a template if someone wants to investigate having them made. I reckon there's a worldwide market (i.e. those wanting to complete a concours restoration of a Cooper S).
