Anyone come across or found out what they were made of? etc

Yes.

According to the factory drawing:

Material: Phenolic resin bonded fibreglass uniformly coated with neoprene paint to bind loose glass fibres.
Density 4 - 6 lbs per cu. ft.
Interlaminar adhesion 0.25 lbs / sq. inch minimum
Phenolic resin 15% nominal by weight

No idea what the above description means in practice. I think there's a few people on here with reasonably unmolested originals that could perhaps be used as a template if someone wants to investigate having them made. I reckon there's a worldwide market (i.e. those wanting to complete a concours restoration of a Cooper S).

Puts the hope it might be Hessian to bed. It does make it sound a lot more like roof bat material, but the black comes from the phenolic resin.

Forgot to mention the drawing says: Colour - Black

Does phenolic resin make it black? Billiard balls are phenolic resin, multiple colours too. I'd say the black I'd from neoprene (same stuff wetsuits are made from) making a nice water proof mat that won't go mouldy and is fairly flame retardant.

Well i'd say the fibres are black because they are sprayed wih phenolic which is an insulator, and the binding layer sprayed on is neoprene which is also black

So, yes :)

No it doesn't, it's usually amber, but the phenolic rubbers I've dealt with are built up with other compounds to make them a little more solid and they usually end up black in my recollection.

My Mk II still has the original under bonnet sound deadening material.

In good nick too.

Does make a difference to cabin noise. :)

How effective are the newer 4 piece ones? Do they cut down noise or just for looks?

I have the 4 peice one fitted and it definetly reduces the noise but makes the bonnet somewhat heavy

Looks good, I'll try one in mine after Xmas and see what it's like. Mine's an improved `matic not an S, so originality doesn't matter. :P

Darrell, is that the same kit you used??
I just bought that, haven't had time to put it on yet, although i am unsure if it will do much. All 4 peices weigh less than 200 grams :? I expected it would be heavier than that and wouldn't it need to be to be effective?

I have the Newton Commercial one and it is good. Makes things quieter, but probably also hotter. It is undoubtedly heavy, but I can still manage to lift the bonnet. Often!

I have this exact set under my bonnet. It is slightly heavy and does an OK job. Every little bit counts. Overall most the noise comes from the firewall and foot well area so that needs to be dynamatted or Resomatted or whatever mat material. Overall as a package it works, by itself, not so noticeable.

I just fitted the 4 piece one from Lindsay and tested with the faithful smart phone decibel reader, before and after and it definitly cut the harsh edge sound by a couple of dB.
Well worth it i recon.
Dynamat on the firewall and floor next!
