I rang the RTA this morning to ascertain exactly what the position would be if I attempted to use a motor in my van that I have. It took me half an hour of discussion to ascertain that they do not have a record of engine numbers using the prefix 12YD/Ta/H. Why is this so? I was told I could not use this engine number in ANY car at all without some sort of emissions testing or I think that is what he said. Why is it every bloody time I ring the RTA I have to get some idiot that cannot speak Australian? This bloke had such a thick Scot accent he was nearly speaking a foreign language. I just want to speak to someone without a language problem for god's sake. Now i've got that off my chest I will continue.
I told him it had been fitted to late mokes as per this sites info.

Is the information on this site accurate?
Why in any case does the RTA have no record of this series of numbers?

Maybe their engine number info is not as up to date as we would like and anyone can be trapped by its incompletness. If I had built this motor I could noit use it in any vehicle I wanted blue slipped and I wonder what would happen if I had put it in a registered car and presented it for engine number change?

12YD/Ta/H is a Morris 1100S. I had one in my Mini for years, so have probably 100 people on this site.
I guess no way they can ID my current 12YE/A/H motor then..

says `1275LS' doesn't it? I think they had 'em too.
Oh, and real late 1275 Mokes had an A+, 12H/389, shows on that list as 1275GT (UK). I've got one of those too, in Barney. Used to be in an 850, 10 years ago, legally- no engineer was required. Yeah it had discs...

prefix on my 1275LS is 12h..........

hope that helps.... I guess ill be the one to find out the hard way about
this old motor in newer car crap, as the new motor by GR is out of 1100s,
in a 77 car...neeeds emission testing by an engineer and its all cool then as per
a email i got from the RTA. so I shall let you know!

How close are you to this? I am wanting to get a motor built using this block and don't want to put it off to long. What does the emission testing involve. I can't see any blue slip place having anything more elaborate than a 4 gas analyser.

I think they leave the slashes out when they rego a car, so 12Y/D/Ta/H.... becomes 12YDTAH....

But anyway, the guy is brainless like most RTA or VIC Roads employees.

As long as your car is pre mid 76 you should not have any issues. If it is mid 76+ you *MAY* have problems with no pollution pump fitted. Buts most people get away with it.

thats just bizarre - I registered my cooper just before lunch, and vicroads never check that kind of stuff. The cooper was registered in NSW before, and the engine number is different now, the person serving me looked up the new engine number in the stolen records system and it didn't come up, no worries at all -

I find vicroads people really helpful and easy to please - and their customer service over the phone is really good too, I never have any hassles.... I reckon a good plan might be for you NSW boys to give your cars to me, I'll register them in Vic and sell them to you, all you're doing is transferring a Vic reg'd car to NSW then, they wouldn't do all the checks on the numbers 'n crap

oh, and both the 1100S engines I have are 12Y/Ta/H

AFAIK Transfer of rego from interstate requires a blue slip which is what you need to register your previously unregistered car in the first place. least ways it did with my camry (SA -> NSW)

If you could do that I'd go rego it in QLD or SA which have more relaxed rego rules that's if it was a case of just transfering regos between states.

If you have a car registered in another state in your name and you move to Vic , you have no roadworthy checks (blue slip, pink slip etc) at all. Just show up and pay the rego fee, surrender the old plates (and get a refund cheque) and you are on your way. They don't even check the engine numbers or chassis numbers.

Some VicRoads people are knowledgeable and helpful. They seem to have improved a lot in the last few years. But there are still some complete morons out there.

correction - they do require a roadworthy when transferring between states, and they will do an inspection - I did it yesterday

Moving NSW>Vic is easy, coming back you are dealing with the Gestapo.
A friend of ours had a VW, did this, and then came back- they gave her a real hard time on return, even though it was originally an NSW car..

If so it must have changed very recently!!

In my experience and that of my in-laws if the car is already in YOUR NAME there is no roadworthy required if moveing from NSW to Vic. If you are buying a car from NSW (ie: transferring a NSW rego car into your name) then you will need a RWC.
