Hi All,
What was the original oil filter for a 1969 Australian Cooper S?
Was it the small diameter tin can type?
Or did they have the aluminium can?
Did the head have the oil filter bypass switch (that was not wired up)?

Thanks in advance.

Small dia tin can, (the Purolator head one)
no pressure switch on filter head,
filter was felt, not paper element.

My 68 has the small dia Purolator one with the oil filter bypass light switch and an aluminium can. Plus it had a felt filter.

OK, you are probably right then. I sold mine 20 years ago...

Purolator with switch, but I thought it should have the tin can, not aluminium.

I was wrong! It is a pressed metal can... (I just dived out to the shed with a camera just for you!)

And if it wasn't so late I might have focused the camera.

Thanks for the info.
I think the aluminium was on one of the Cooper's or 850's - not sure

HYL103 was the genuine felt part number (from my horribly aging memory)
who are you anyways & why are you typing into my microwave oven?

:-)

Resurrecting a thread from a couple of months ago. . .what are the applications of these three Purolator filter cases? All three have pressed metal cans (not aluminium) and all three are small diameter.

1. Has a bypass switch. . .sounds like this one is Mk1 and early Mk2 S?
Image

2. Bypass switch boss but no actual switch.

3. No boss or switch.

Any ideas?

The last one was definitely on 850, and maybe on early Cooper.

Thanks Doc. . .I'm hoping that the one with the boss but without the switch is for a later Mk2 S. . .'cos that's what I need. . . :)

I didn't realise I had so many of these things lying around until I went looking.

Just had a look at what our 4th month 1970 build Mini K has, we have had it from new. looks the same as number 3 version but to my surprise when I rubbed off a bit of the grease and crud it has RYCO cast into the filter head. Always thought it had a Purolator filter. Apart from the name it looks the same as the Purolator one in pic 3.

Ryco were used on the K, Morris 1100 etc as they were Australian made.
But Cooper S motors were built in UK and shipped here complete with filter.
