Hey, I'm in the middle of changing my oil filter.
The one that came off is different to what I have, and according to the how ever many manual I have, there is supposed to be a spring forcing the filter up to the engine away from the housing it is in. Mine doesn't have a spring, and it appears the original filter might not have been sealing properly if there is supposed to be one.
Is a spring required?

Yes, it should have a spring.

yeah, there should be a plate at the bottom of the filter housing, with a big spring under it - the spring forces the filter up to the top pof the housing - if it wasn't there before, then the filter wasn't filtering, the oil would have gone over the top of it and back into the motor

go get a spring - if you can't find a proper one, find one about 2 inches long and fairly strong

I could tell it wasn't working by the amount of steel stuck on the drain plug.
So much for a quck job.

Goto Ebay uk and get the spin on oil filter type one. Much better and cheap mod for the $20 it'll cost you to get it here. I know this don't help you now but worth it the long run.

Can you buy them here?

you can but they cost more, if you need one in a rush, i am sure someone may come to the party with oe you can buy. sorry i havn't got a spare at the moment. Also the filter will cost ya $5 odd bucks rather than the other ones which if i recall cost somewhat more. Plus changing them takes 2 minutes rather than an hour for the old type(yes a small lie, but you get my point).

Harles, you must have all of the parts that are shown, like the exploded views of the filter

i realised after about oil 3 changes i was missing the seal plate which sits on the end of the filter
i mustve thrown it out coz it was stuck to the filter

so dont throw yours out, theyre $16 to replace

I've not thrown anything out yet, I don't do it until everything is working properly.

when everything is covered in oil and the seal plate sticks on the end of a hot oil filter you just wanna play hot potato with, you dont really notice it

Not all filters have a plate on the bottom of the filter. If it takes a Ryco R2200P filter it does not have a plate.

Look at type D and E in the photo below. They are the Australian made filter case that take the R2200P filter.

They all had a plate, but..
Early filters (and S) had a separate plate, the Deluxe and later (with the filter switch thingy in the housing) took the filter with the integral plate.
S filter originally was a felt one, God knows why..
Can't remember the numbers of all of 'em now, I'm a spin-on convert..
