Hi Peeps : im was just going to install my ball joints and i remember reading here that you torque them up to 72-75 ft-lb and my manual " gregorys " states its 40 ft-lbs " 54Nm " .

This is for my 1973 Leyland Mini , so anyone have a definative answer ?

Cheers Bill

Books are not too clear-
The 7/16 UNF nut on the balljoint pin is 40. The dirty big balljoint cup is 72.

As always Doc thank you for clearing that up for me , will have a go at them tomorrow bought a heap of shims " various sizes " so shouldnt be too much drama.

One extra thing is it ok to put them in as in or should i go the lapping paste way ? these are Unipart ball joints if that makes a difference ,

Cheers Bill

I'd try them without lapping and see how they feel. If not tighter in 1 spot than others they'll be OK.
If you do lap them make sure you wash all the muck away before assembly.

Regardling lapping, I wasn't going to do mine, but after getting them and feeling them, I decided to. The machining marks were circular, so the marks would line up in the straight position and it would stick in that position, but were about the same everywhere else. I got some paste and ground them by hand (I've heard some people use drills and such). It takes 5 minutes per ball joint, it's not a big job.

Quick question because my brain is failing me. The upper and lower ball joints are the same aren't they - ie interchangeable? Ie I can theoretically buy the kit that has one upper and one lower ball joint and use one for LH upper and one for RH upper?

They are the same, just one of them is assembled with a spring after checking the shims

As Tim said above.
Lower ball joint has a spring under the cup. Set the clearance without the spring installed. Once happy disassemble and install the spring, reassemble.

Great thanks guys - I'm using them both as upper ball joints, as they took a bit of a beating removing them.
