Ok guys, time to slip on your anoraks and answer this question.

The Mk1 Cooper S's had 12G333 gearbox cases until mid to late 1968 when they changed to 12A1288 gearbox cases with 'S' ratio's. I want to find out approx when in 1968 the change occurred?

:?

Maybe I should ask the question another way. If you have a 1968 cooper s, could you please state the date on the wiper motor and whether you have a 333 or 1288 gearbox casing?

I looked in a few Mini parts books but they're no help. For a start they have the part number, not the casting number.

I have looked through all my production changes but alas no reference to change in casing numbers. The only reference to such a change occurred at 9FE/XE/Y 51501 when the vehicle, then a MkII, was fitted with four synchro gearbox, Casing Number 22G1128.

My car is approximately September 68, YKG2S2 4612 and is fitted with a 12G333 gearbox.

Interesting guys, I am starting to wonder whether the case numbers changed around the same time the windscreen wipers changed from right hand to left hand park position.

My Cooper S...
Car 4026
Wiper motor 10/67
Gearbox 22G333

Should have been made mid 68.
According to the BMC books this should be the second last car with the wipers parking on the right. (UK wiper motor)

My 3 synchro gearbox listings (Mini car Clinic, & Mini King) shows NO gearboxes with a 12 prefix, afaik they are all 22A or 22G, not 12.

Doc
Have a look at the topic heading
12G333 & 12A1288
this is why I made the point that mine is 22A

Don't make me go out to the shed again. I don't enjoy reading gearbox numbers while standing on my head.

That is really interesting if car number 4027 is the last car with the right hand park wipers. It is looking that the 333 casing changed to 1288 not long after...
